Songs with specific aircraft in the lyrics

Here’s one for ya – listening to the radio on the way back from Court today – heard Jetliner by the Steve Miller Band – mentioned ‘getting on a 707’ –

any more songs which mention specific types…rather than aeroplane/airplane etc – ?

And no, anything by The Eagles, Hurricane #1 etc does not count –

nor do comedy changes such as Fat Boy Zlinn, Girls Aloft, Screaming J Hawkinge, BB King Air, Paul Welkin, Bill Halley and the Comets…oh that was a real one…:)

Singer Jimmy Buffett has tons of references to his planes and flying..

His album, Somewhere Over China, the song by the same name is dedictaed to the crazy Flying Tigers… and also mentions the space shuttle…

What the hell did Marco Polo think
When he ran into the wall
Or the crazy Flying Tigers
Doin’ spins and loops and stalls …
…….
How I would love to drive the shuttle
Just to feel the engines roar
And to operate the levers
That control the payload doors
I could buzz the Himalayas
Barrel roll above Hong Kong
Set her down in San Francisco
To the clangin’ of a gong
________________
In Banana Wind, the hidden track song is Treetop Flier

I fly any cargo that you can pay to run
The bush league pilots, they just can’t get the job done
You’ve got to fly down the canyon, don’t never see the sun
There’s no such thing as an easy run

I’m a treetop flyer
Treetop flyer
______________________
His album Far Side of The World, song Someday I Will has

I see a flying boat
and I get a lump in my throat
and I say Someday I Will
Someday…

He has a lot more, but I won’t bore you guys… But you can tell JB is an avid aviator….

How about “Spirit Of St. Louis” by the excellent UK indie band British Sea Power?

And do you know his name was Lindy
He flew the spirit of St. Louis

Ah!

We’ll raise the spirit of St.Louis
If all of you’d sing Louis, Louis

Come all of ye sing
Come all of ye sing
Come all of ye ah sing Louis, Louis

Ah!

And there’s a little trouble in the starboard wing
And a number of stuka’s are coming in
Are just coming in

Oh Louis, Louis
Hey Louis, Louis

Hey Louis, Louis
Yeah Louis, Louis

Or, controversially, I’m sure theres a reference to a Hawk jet in protest-folk band Sieze The Day’s “With My Hammer”

Love Jay

Geoff, you should be on “I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Clue” 🙂

I’m a big fan of the show Dave. They did do a recording at a theatre only a couple of miles from me recently, but by the time I heard about it all the tickets had gone 🙁

If you’re a fan too, check out this – http://www.isihac.co.uk/

Geoff.

In the late 60s there was a group called “The Box Tops” that had a big hit with a song call “The Letter” that said

Get me a ticket for an airplane I have no time to take a fast train

the follow on was another song I guess it was called “727”

anyway the text was Seven Twentyseven take me to heaven, Seven Twentyseven take me home

Bye

Geoff, you should be on “I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Clue” 🙂

Although I don’t think any specific aircraft are mentioned in these, a few aviation related wartime songs I like to listen to are:
He Wears A Pair Of Silver Wings (Dinah Shore)
Coming In On A Wing And A Prayer (The Four Vagabonds)
I Fell In Love With An Airman (Tessie O’Shea)
Wings Over The Navy (several artists)
It’s a Pair of Wings For Me (Nat Gonella & his Orchestra)

Has anyone mentioned Jefferson Airplane? Or Eight Miles High?

Not an aircraft as such but in Cut some rug by the Bluetones there is a line

And all the time you remind me
Of blitzkrieg and the doodle bug

Chuck Berry’s “Promised Land” has a line – “Workin’ on a t-bone steak on a Connie”.

No specific types mentioned but Typically Tropical’s “Barbados” has lots of pretty accurate ATC chatter and The Beatles “Back in the USSR” features the sound of a turboprop (possibly a Viscount).

Someone mentioned the SR71s. What about… (sorry about this)

Bye Bye Blackbird

Blackbird (singing in the dead of night)

They’ll be blackbirds over
The white cliffs of Dover

Ok, I’m going now

Here in Belgium we got a dutch song wich goes as follows:

Ik was verliefd op een airhostes,
t’was in een DC6.

Translated:

I was in love with a airhostes,
It was in a DC6.

The song is a romantic adventure in a DC6. This guy just travels the world in a DC6 to be with the love of his life (sadly not the DC6  ) He flies to London, San Francisco, Hong Kong and Las Vegas. He must be a very rich guy to travel to those destinations each week. :p

PS: The artists name is Will Tura.

I was pretty Chuffed by ‘Screaming J Hawkinge’ but ‘Siksin by the dock of the bay’ by Geoff has my #1 vote!!!!

Brilliant! Have a great weekend all!
