T-6/Harvards in the U. K.

Just read a different post and it got me thinking about Harvards, of which there has been a great number flying in the U. K. The Flypast issue in Feb. 87 had a great roundup of all Harvards which had graced the U. K. register. Wonder how many are still around, and how many have come and gone. Maybe it is time to make an updated list of T-6/Harvards in the U.K. These are the ones still around (I think) that I can remember!

Another one from G-EJMH

Does that mean that there are 2 Harvards in the UK with the same markings???? I can see one with the registration G-ELMH from where I sit which looks very much the same……

There are four ex-British T-6s out there I’d like to see photos of, and they are; G-SUES which went to Norway, G-RBAC/G-VALE which went to the U.S, G-ELLY which crashed, and G-RCAF which also migrated to the U.S. Anyone with that dusty old image in a cupboard? 😉

The TFC machine has to be one of the unsung masterpieces of historic aircraft restoration. It really is a beautiful piece of craftsmanship and a credit to the organisation.

There’s also KF183 at Boscombe, which is still airborne every now and then…

Harvards/Texans in the UK

Dear friends,

“Nr. 16” is message 22 is not G-BTKI; it’s more likely (as stated elsewhere) G-DDMV in the early colours. G-BTKI was a former French Air Force (La Ferte Alais woods !) T-6G Texan, and sold to the US before being completed.

Regards,

Benno

Sorry to drag up an old thread, but I’ve just found a pic of G-JUDI on my old computer and thought it should be in here with the other Harvards also found a pic of TFC’s example prior to restoration.

Ok, I’ve done a closer inspection of the poster. It is SAAF serial 7721 and it is being used to advertise Rougham(Spelling?). Is this Harvard in the UK??

Yes – Yak 11 is right – Susy has an engine under rebuild in the states, actually ite been there since before Paul passed away – its together now but under test runs about a month or so ago it started ‘making metal’ so its being stripped down again.
We had hoped to have her flying for the airshow, but that kinda torpedoed things.

She’s being worked on at present by Mark to get the cowlings and prop back on her for a static appearance a week on sunday at the Sywell Airshow.

Paul was a really nice chap – TT’s story is a classic case in point – never an edge to him, always keen to talk to other aviation minded types and fly em where possible.

Lucy is current on the Six and flies her when she’s home from Scotland its still in ANG markings and will be flying with Peter Meyrick’s -G at the show (Ex Martin Sargent) – which will make the formation that more poignant to those ‘in the know’

I’ll never forget the noise that day and the sight of the Fury on her back one of the most terrible things i’ve seen 🙁

I think the T6 is still flying and so will the P51D when it gets it’s new engine. That was the last I heard a month or so ago.

Dear TJ – Its a small world isnt it – I’m from Sywell and will be having a pint with Paul’s son tomorrow!

Cheers

Paul Morgan. Now that was a very nice, down to earth kinda guy. I had gotten in touch with him about seeing his T-6 without knowing about his involvement in F1. It took several years before I made it, but after the Autosport show at the NEC in 1998 I stopped by and was picked up by Paul at the rail station, driven out to Sywell, and before long found myself in the back seat of the T-6. Paul casually mentioned that “I’m going to pick someone up later today, and need to test that everything is working ok, by the way, would you like to go for a ride?” You just can’t say no to that! Off we went and did a fly-by at Bruntingthorpe before flying over the Ilmor plant, and back to Sywell. At this time the Sea Fury wasn’t there yet, as he needed to do something to the hangar door (IIRC) to fit the plane in! I had hoped to visit Sywell again to see the Fury, but never made it. This guy took a lot of time out to pick up someone he didn’t even know, fly him in the T-6, and drive him back to the train! Just goes to show that a great guy he was! And will be missed!!

P. S. What is the plan for the T-6, and P-51D? I see that they are still on the register!

Isn’t number 16 G-DDMV in the scheme it wore when first brought to the UK?

20 is G-ELMH

Whoaa LAHARVE
That was quite a good selection of Harvards. Thanks for sharing. I didn’t even know that Philip Warner’s G-BTKI was flyable. Now gone to the U.S. I see on G-INFO. It just goes to show that the Harvard has been well represented in the U.K. Photo#1 FT329 should be G-BIWX IIRC.

G-BHTH and Thumper were at Shoreham recently as well, are they still there?

Can G-BHTH be rebuilt to flying condition after the crash? That was also a fatal accident, wasn’t it?

There are four ex-British T-6s out there I’d like to see photos of, and they are; G-SUES which went to Norway, G-RBAC/G-VALE which went to the U.S, G-ELLY which crashed, and G-RCAF which also migrated to the U.S. Anyone with that dusty old image in a cupboard? 😉
