Hi all
After the flying finished at OW last night a few of us adjourned for a curry and the discussion ventured onto a forum Christmas gathering.
Somehow for my sins I got the job of organising it–well at least the job of testing the water.
So if I got some prices and a venue worked out who would be interested in attending?
Wives, husbands, partners will be welcome and there was some discussing of a photographic competition, open to all comers.
Just post a line here if you’re interested so I can get a general feel for numbers.
Cheers
Andy 🙂 🙂

What’s on my wish list?
As I spend Christmas in Belgium, I would like good beer, good food and dry weather so I can enjoy the night stalls at the Christmas market in Brugge. We did that last year and it was superb – a gorgeous chip stand, hot drinks stalls, ice skating and then to my favourite bar in the world for a special Belgian Christmas beer.
As for pressies – a DVD drive for my PC, as my current one seems to have packed up:(

I’ve had my Xmas present, I was going through my late fathers family heirlooms last weekend and found some of my grandfathers stuff, which my mother let me bring home.
All from WW1, these include his Royal Scots Glenngary cap, Sam Browne belt and most interestingly, a little diary for the weeks around Xmas 1917, couldn’t believe finding that.
It’s very poignant to see what was happening exactly 90 years ago.
Xmas breakfast consisted of bread and butter with boiled bacon, dinner was bully beef stew followed by plum duff, tea was bread and butter, oranges, nuts, biscuits and ciggies and this was in camp away from the trenches, which was duly destroyed by high winds and blizzards.
He spent New Years Eve on guard all night, then off to the front and spent the first night asleep on the fire step in the trenches to keep out of the mud and snow.
Makes you think doesn’t it.

Women – don’t you just love ’em to bits?:) I sometimes wonder what some of them have between their ears.
Just thought of something to go on my wish list at last: “55 Days at Peking” DVD not that I’m likely to get it as the other half wouldn’tknow where to look for it.
Most of the have lolly sticks holding their ears apart .

My sister-in-law asked me to get her one of those popular ”George Formby” Grills… I asked her if she planned to lean it on a lampost ??? 😮 😀

The American Ambassador had asked for “democracy to be accepted throughout the world”, the French Ambassador had asked for “world peace”, the Indian Ambassador had asked for “greater understanding between different religions and cultures” and the British Ambassador had asked for…”a pipe and some slippers!”
Presumably that would be all that he required after his international colleagues had received their gifts of choice ? 😀

There is an apocryphal story told about the British ambassador to the UN or somewhere.
He was phoned by a journalist from a national newspaper or magazine and asked the question “what would he like for Christmas?” He had been briefed by the Foreign Office that, when in conversation, to beware of saying anything that could be interpreted as soliciting a bribe from those cultures where bribery was the accepted norm. Mindful of this he responded to the question accordingly.
Later he was horrified to discover that a list had been published detailing what all the other ambassadors had asked for.
The American Ambassador had asked for “democracy to be accepted throughout the world”, the French Ambassador had asked for “world peace”, the Indian Ambassador had asked for “greater understanding between different religions and cultures” and the British Ambassador had asked for…”a pipe and some slippers!”

A long break from those mind numbing, insanity inducing Christmas songs that follow you around the shops every flaming year-same ones, we all know the words by now and some of us have had to listen to the same old stuff since 1973.Every single year.
A golden tip: sing each along with each and every Christmas song, but substitute Christmas for Fistmas. Suddenly, it isn’t all that bad anymore. Works best in department stores with plenty of children around. Surely mum and dad will know what that man ment in his song?

😀 😀 I have to admit there are times when I feel that way about some of the presents I receive. I doubt I’m alone in my conclusion that it’s usually ageing relatives who give us presents that are candidates for the first avialable boot sale in the new year.

A Fondue set, and a Toasted sandwich Maker, plus a map to the nearest car boot sale, so that they can cut out the middleman.

That’s something that I’d be very pleased to see but I don’t think we’ll see it in our lifetime (unfortunately)
