Rumours are ripe on the island, that a Rapide is on it’s way over from the UK. As of yet however, I’ve been unable to get an ID on it. It is descriped as flying “but needing a facelift”.
Any idea which Rapide this could be?

That machine should never have had to live out. Surely some hangar space could have been found?
Hope it’s looked after better in Iceland.

yep – its at cranfield – flew in it twice – I THINK its the Ex-Sywell one – its a Dominie actually been up for sale for ages- G-AKRP – very sorry tale – been at Cranfield outside for nearly a year – owner spent 8 years rebuilding it and it went for little money considering all the hard work put into it- long story. very sad.
I heard the RUMOUR that its going abroad….:(
Good bloke, the previous owner.
I’ve flown in this one too. Lovely aircraft.
When I did fly in it a couple of years back it was immaculate. Certainly not in need of a facelift then.

Yes it has suffered from being outside. A lot 🙁

Sywell Dominie
I looked at this 2 years ago, Rex Ford wanted £160k for it then.
I was tempted but thought it was a bit too much. It also has scarce (non-standard?) wobbly props on it and he didn’t want to let go of the spares he had.
Has it suffered too much by being outside? It must have done. I worry if any of my fabric machines are outside for just one night (but will always take the risk @ G-VFWE etc.).
The sun is a killer too.
Outside parking v hangarage represents no saving at all in the long run in my view. In the case of old planes – it is disastrous.

Interesting news….
I think this was the aircraft that visited Lincolnshire a few years ago and did some flights out of Wickenby?? out to Skegness, up the coast and return a couple or more times….I think this may have included a fly through of the current Skegness Aerodrome ??..
It looked and sounded lovely as it came low over Spilsby here…a real treat to see.

G-AKRP
Here it is at Sywell, exactly three years ago today looking in splendid condition. It is so sad G-AKRP has been apparently abandoned at Cranfield, but I’m delighted to hear someone has bought it that will look after her, but of course I wish it would have remained here in UK. Please keep us updated on this.

Thanks for this info 😀 This is very interesting.
This aircraft will be in very good hands here in Iceland. The owners are two gentlemen who between them own 100% stake in the Icelandic airline, Air Atlanta Icelandic. They are both aircraft ‘nuts’, and are building up a very impressive collection of aircraft. To give an idea of their collection they have already a TB10, Cessna C140, Pitts S1, Pitts S2XS (S2 on steriods), Piper PA18-150 with all the STC’s available and a DO-28 that is just out of restoration and has to be seen to be believed! Both of them are very devoted to aviation history and are actively involved in the preservation scene here.
Without having any idea what they are going to do with the aircraft, I would imagine it is going to be painted to represent one of two Dominie’s that very operated by Flugfélag Íslands (Air Iceland) during the war. To give you an idea here is a picture of one of them. It should be overall ORANGE in colour.

One with long range tanks? 😀
The potential group is not a long list. Didn’t Aeroplane publish a survivors list recently?
