Remember the debate we had a while back as to whether we’d like to see AR501 have her clipped wings restored??
Looking at this shot by Manonthefence, I’m gonna have to say those elliptical wingtips have grown on me…..

I think Ed Storro is in Tennessee somewhere? He also built the Bristol F2B replica that Peter Jackson now owns in New Zealand

Not sure, but it was built by a chap called Ed Storro, and is based on the Jurca MJ10. You should be able to look him up on the FAA site.

TJ – it’s not the real thing, but the best I can come up with…
(I also know it’s not Berg’s markings, but it’s still a Norwegian-marked Spit! :D)
Where is this one based?

Norwegian markings – about two thirds down the page:

I preferred the clipped wings on 501. I also wish HFL would clip the wings on their Mk16 & Mk18 & repaint the 18 in the silver & red to make a trio of exciting coloured clipped wing Spits. Could make a good warbird aerobatic team.

Clipped wing Spitfire
While visiting East Fortune, Dodrums and I took a close look at the wing tips on this Spitfire, and couldn’t decide whether they had been clipped properly or not – there was an impression that it may have been an “amateur” job. Does anyone know more about this particular Spitfire and its wing tips?

Anyone got any pics of MH434 in the Norwegian scheme? Mark12?

I have a bunch of A-A but they are copyright restricted.
We must have included a shot in the ‘MH434 images/JDK book’ thread at the beginning of this year.

First of all, I am one of those who loved seeing TD248 in the Silver/Red colors. Glad to see something besides the usual camo paint. Also like the Dutch MKIX. Would however love to see a MKIX flown in the colors of Rolf Arne Berg (132 Wing). I prefer to see elliptical wings on a Merlin powered Spit, but a Griffon powered version looks good with clipped wings. With elliptical wings the plane looks very pretty, but with clipped wings it becomes more aggresive. Just look at MV293 vs MH434 at a display. 434 would be like a ballet dancer, and 293 would be more like your “exotic dancer” :diablo:

No, it was for some film. Pearl Misspelling.

I think the elliptical wings were added to MK912 to lower her landing/stall speeds. Is this also the case for AR501? Airbedaine??

And RN201 has clipped wigs too. A good compromise! 🙂
I like both versions, but slightly prefer the cliped wing version. And AR501 is not the only spit to lose its clipped wing. MK912 also transformed to a elliptical wing when it left for Canada. But I must confess that the elliptical wing is the trademark of the spit.

Surprising how things grow on you.
I never used to like seeing Spitfires in silver with a red stripe but I LOVE RN201.

Well I thinki diversity is good and I think it is great that some Spits look different to others and portray all the various versions and sub types – its not like there is a shortage of eleptical versions around. I also like to see the Griffon engined clipped wing version as well – looks very mean but “right ” somehow.

A bit of a bodge
But if you one cant rip off ones own picture 😀
I have no major preference either way but I have fond memories of 501 being the first Spitfire I saw with clipped wings.

I prefer the clipped wings. It’s not important though.

I know the clipped wings had a purpose 60 years ago, but I think a Spitfire doesn’t look complete without the elliptical wing tip.
