72 Sqn Gladiators

Hi Flood,

Nice Gladiator photos. Two cuaght my eye – K6131 and K6132 – both served with 72 Sqn. I am writing a history of the squadron and wondered if you would be kind enough to let me have copies of these two photos for the book. I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours

Tom:)

It’s being repainted, so we’ll have two freshly painted Gladiators on the scene next year. There are some excellent in-progress shots here: http://forum.planetalk.net/viewtopic.php?t=2952

Very exciting. Could it be that it will re-emerge in an RAF silver scheme? Here’s hoping!!

The top one of these is my favourite of the markings carried by ‘RK in her life. May even have one or two pics at home of her as K8032. Always thought the Gladiator a nice looking aircraft.

Many years ago we had a neighbour who was in the RAF before WW2. He stated that the Gauntlet possessed the finest flying characteristics of any and all the aircraft that he flew.

I’m always glad to see Gloster Gladiators, but I’ll throw down the gauntlet to see who can post photos of its predecessor!

Gladiators with VP Props

sycamore

The second of the two pics showing a VP prop. is a well-known one of one of the “Bleriators” created on Malta by using ex-Blenheim engines and props. The complete engine was needed since it would have had the oil feeds etc for the prop which a Gladiator Mercury would not. From memory the Engineering Officer responsible for these creations was quoted as claiming that they would outclimb a Hurricane (Mk. 1, Trop, knackered – presumably).

Thank You All

Thank’s Flood 😀 ,

I was thinking where did the hell did the Norgie come from  ,

As I had not heard of any more flyers,

I must keep up with the new paint jobs :p ,

All top shots,

That last one is a beauty 😉 ,

Not sure about the prop question  ,

But I am sure someone out there does  ,
Cheers everyone, Tally Ho! Phil 🙂

Great photos of a great biplane;I guess the first is a Charles Brown and really has a great feel to it. The interesting one`s are `MRK when fitted with a metal prop, and the two from Lars Lundin showing a/c fitted with two different props, one possibly from a Wildcat, the other from a Blemheim/Battle/Wellesley .Anyone shed any light, and were the props used as constant -speed or set as fixed -pitch??
