1960s Airshow at Elstree

I wonder whether anyone can help with information about the first airshow I ever attended. It was at Elstree Aerodrome and would have been in 1966 or 1967. I was only about 10 at the time and my memories of the day are very vague. My parents didn’t have a car then (so definitely pre-1968) and my main memories are of the problems getting there from Hendon by public transport! I know that the Red Arrows displayed. Unfortunately we still hadn’t arrived by then, but I do remember one of their Gnats flying across the road at what seemed to be tree-top height.

Does anyone else remember this airshow or have any details of what was there?

Thanks,
Seafire

Thanks Steve for this great shot !

I am now wondering how many liveries / paint-jobs this particular P-51D (N6356T) had while in the U.K.

I will start a new thread on that one.
Cheers
Martin

Steve,

Many thanks for that! I knew I could rely on the encyclopeadic knowledge of the forum’s members! The photo is a real bonus. I’d had a vague idea that there had been a P-51, but had discounted it. So it turns out that the static “Big Beautiful Doll” at Duxford in 1975 wasn’t my first Mustang after all.

I’m pretty sure that was the year that Charles Masefield flew his P-51 in the display. I’ll check my records at home and let you know, but if it was, I should have a full list of what was there.
