According to Bill Gunston’s Encyclopedia of Russian Aircraft, Yakovlev told Stalin that the Su-11 was ‘just another Me262 copy’,thus putting Yakovlev’s designs in a favourable light.
And I think it was the Yak-15 competing at the time?

Yes, the one on the left is the Alekseyev I (for Istrebitel, meaning fighter)-211. It was totally underpowered with it’s TR-1 turbojets. When the batch of British engines was bought in 1947, Alekseyev redesigned it a bit and came up with the I-215 with two Derwents. This gave enough power for the pretty heavy jet (armament was either three 37mm or two 57mm cannon), but it was discovered it needed a bit of structural tweaking on the wins.
A two-seater I-212 was also under development, until Yakovlev made his comments to Stalin. Following that, both Alekseyev and Sukhoi’s design bureaus were disbanded with both ending up as forced labourers in other design bureaus. Sukhoi of course got fully rehabilitated and re-opened his design bureau, Alekseyev stayed at TsAGI and went on to do various projects like air-to-air refuelling and hydrofoil boats.

I’d agree that the one on the left is the Alexeyev S-211,whilst the photo and the second line drawing are of an Su-9.The Su-11 differed from the -9 in having the engines mounted in completely underslung nacelles, rather like the 262,along with one or two other refinements.
I think it’s somewhat unkind to term the Su’s 9 & 11 as Me262 rip-offs;true,they had similar engines, but the similarities end there.Aerodynamically and structurally they were completely different-just look at the straight wings for starters. According to Bill Gunston’s Encyclopedia of Russian Aircraft, Yakovlev told Stalin that the Su-11 was ‘just another Me262 copy’,thus putting Yakovlev’s designs in a favourable light.

IIRC the one on the left is an Alexeev (sp?) S-211 or something like that, anyone?
