Hi All I’m looking for names of pilots and groundcrew who played football for any British clubs before the war and after, The reason for this request is due to the lack of help from British football clubs with my Battle Of Britain Wings Appeal. Any help would be very welcome.
Many Thanks

Bader certainly played rugby to a high standard – I believe he was being considered for the England team at the time of his accident.

I know this doesn’t answer your question, but out of interest….
Last season, Leicester City initiated a ‘Poppy Day’ Premiership match, where proceeds went to the Poppy Day Appeal.
The Club’s players wore special football tops with the poppy embroidered on the front. The match may even have been shown on Sky.
If I remember correctly, the tops were auctioned after the match and the proceeds donated to the Appeal. 😎
Regards,
Paul

I know it’s not really answering your question (neither a footballer nor a pilot) but I know of an RAF Officer who was the CO of a large RAF radio station during the war. He had been captain of the England Rugby team pre-war. Would this be of any interest? His name was H B Toft.

Its makes me sick to think men and women who served and died for this country here and abroad, are now just forgotten heroes. I cant belive that so called large football clubs just dont give a damn, we seem to do more for other countries than our own, but I will keep on trying with my appeal and thanks for all your help.
cheers rob

The real stars/heros are those old gents who did so much (and are so modest about what they did) 60+ years ago.
Couldn’t have put it better myself! Too many veterans are left to rot in old folks homes when they are national treasures and should be getting our respect.

It was said at Chailey on Sunday, when the three Poles were exchanging stories in front of quite a crowd of onlookers, if Mr & Mrs Posh Spice had walked in at that moment, nobody would have batted an eyelid. There’s too many so-called celebrities (“don’t you know who I am?”) :
.. to which the classic put-down riposte is:-
“…can anybody help this person – they don’t know who they are.” 🙂

Agree absolutley!!–Well done for saying.

Hear, hear. It’s cases like this that make me wonder why we don’t have the death penalty brought back. There’s too many so-called celebrities (“don’t you know who I am?”) who seem to think the law applies to everyone else, but that they are above such trivialities. 😡 😡 😡

Does this suprise anyone.
Load of multi-millionaires concerned only with their next fat transfer-fee divvy-up.
Good news about that scum from WBA getting six years for taking out an oldie in his £100,000 Merc then running away.
Should have been sixteen IMHO
