Hello,
I got some more pics to share. This time is a bit different. here are my first air to air pics I took in my life. I got a ride in the only flying VL Viima in the world. This aircraft was built in Finland in 1938 and used as a primary trainer. The example I had a ride in is owned by the Flying Legends group based at Kortijk Wevelgem in Belgium. It has been in the UK some time ago as G-BAAY. Here is the technical info about the Viima:
Type: Viima II
Country: Finland
Manufactured by: Valtion Lentokonetehdas
Year: 1938
Crew: 2
Engine: Siemens Halske Sh 14 radial with 160Hp
Wingspan: 9.2m
Length: 7.35m
Height: 2.73m
Weight: 551kg
Maximum speed: 186 km/h
ceiling: 3700m
range: 776km
Here are some pics of this superb aircraft earlier that day during the WAW event.

Ah, thanks to bump this old tread to the top again. Yes, the Viima (ex G-BAAY) was used in aces High. We had discussed this piece of history of this machine just a few weeks ago.
Is Acesz High available on DVD. I haven’t seen it and would love to see this Viima in it’s glory on screen!
Greets,
Stieglitz
PS: One more for the fans of this unique machine:

What a fantastic experience !
The photo of the Stampe against the sun, and the Stearman breaking away are brilliant.
Thanks for sharing.

Great stuff, Stieg.
Funny, I was thinking some of the shots were reminiscent of “Aces High” before I read the rest of the posts about the Viima.

The Viima was also a regular VAC attendee…

Yes, was owned by PM, but before that was based at Booker for many years in the ownership of Phillip Mann. As I recall, it was used in ‘Aces High’, and they consumed a rather effective replica in one of the crash scenes.

Thanks for the nice comments! 🙂 How did you notice I had a great time? :p Yes, I had a lot of fun! I hope my skills in photography will improve so that I can share more in the future. I realy enjoyed the ride and taking the pics.

Is that the Viima that used to be owned by Paul McConnell here in the UK?

Stieglitz, that Viima is simply awesome, u r a really lucky chap to fly with such machines 🙂
A curiosity: the Siemens Halske engine is the same used on my friend’s Fokker Dr.I replica. A really nice engine, but I always thought it’s too delicate to be used on aeroplanes 😉

Wow! All the veteran pilots I know have flown with a Viima in their training. It is great to see one still in the air.
Could I ask a service? Could I have full resolution versions of these photos? I’d print them to photo paper and deliver the photos to the Finnish war pilots’ association chairman, the photos would be passed from hand to hand in the war pilots’ next meeting. I’m sure the photos would bring them many happy memories.

Sorry for that teasing Mike, but I hope you can forgive me!
Very good effort. I bet you had to use auto-focus; if the Vima is as breezy as a Tiger to fly in, your eyes water so much you have trouble seeing if it is in focus or not! keep ’em coming.
The auto focus didn’t work fine due to poor visibility, so it was done with manual focus. BTW, I had my goggles on! 😉

Nice photos, the Viima looks a nice aircraft and well preserved too. You certainly know how to make me jealous. Can’t wait for your next show.
