Hadn’t looked – but I’ve just noticed one went for £202 two days earlier!

Silly season on ebay at the moment.
The Miles book went for £92 and there have been several other Putnams in the last few days at over £30.

Putnams.

Hi all
that kindly gent still has that copy of Miles aircraft on his shelf for £250.00.
He is some sort of nutcase with his prices.
Those that know me know that I’m a bit of a Putnams collector and if his prices are a true reflection of the stuff I’m worth far more than I though but, sadly they’re not. You can half all his prices to get a true value.
A good Miles Aircraft copy should go between £100.00 and 150.00–still a lot for book though. Having said all that the E-bay specialists will push this one through the ceiling I expect.
I wonder if this one is the one that was on ABE-Books a few weeks ago for $175.00.
We’ll see.
If anyone is interested in Putnams a good buy at present would be to pick up the last series they did on the centenary of flight edited by Philip Jarrett.
All these are currently available on remainder at £12..99 each. Buy them for that and put them on the shelves and just wait. More fun than the building society and nice to own too.
Cheers
Andy 😉 😉 😉 😉

PS. I’ll being doing racing tips and stock market advice next. 🙂 🙂 😉 😉 🙂

The Book of Miles Aircraft, compiled by A H Lukins, edited by D A Russell, Published by Harborough – my edition was published in May 1946 for the princely sum of 10/6, but cost me £32 about five years ago!

It’s an A4 (approx) format with a picture, description and 1/72 three-view of most Miles types. It’s only 1/4″ thick, but it contains a mine of information. Second hand booksellers should find a copy for you for around £40.

I have also seen the Putnam one on a dealers stall at Duxford 3 years ago for £250! Though I would never get one until I got one for £20 on Amazon, what a bargain.
Putnam book is more of type by type, Wings over Woodley is more the story side. Both great books.

Me too – it does come up now and then on ebay, but maybe its the dealers who are buying them and thus inflating the price!

Peter Amos (of The Miles Aircraft Collection) has done a very thorough and major update of the Don Brown original and very much hopes to finalise publication soon.

I’ve seen the Putnam book go for the thick end of a hundred quid on Ebay. It appears to be one of the rarer ones.

Just to back up CharlieLimas comments, one of the dealers at Flying Legends was asking £200 for the Putnam Don Brown book. Do people really pay these prices? I’d better put my copy under lock and key if they do. I did hear talk of a new book due out this year which is due from the Miles Preservation Society. Anybody know the latest?

Neil,

Try looking for the following:-

Brown, Don, L (1970, hardback) ‘Miles Aircraft Since 1925’ (Putnam & Co., ISBN 0 370 00127 3).

Fostekew, Jean M. (1998) ‘Blossom – A Biography of Mrs F.G. Miles’ (Cirrus Associates S.W., Gillingham, Dorset).

Simpson, Rod (1998) ‘The Archive Photographs Series – Miles Aircraft’ (The Chalford Publishing Co, Stroud, Gloucs, ISBN 0 7524 1091 1).

Temple, Julian C (1987, hardback) ‘Wings Over Woodley – The Story of Miles Aircraft and the Adwest Group’ (Aston Publications, Bourne End, Bucks.).

The two 1998 books should still be obtainable but the other two are long out of print and therefore will usually be expensive to buy. Keep an eye on ebay and in secondhand or specialist bookshops!
