Hi
What is the most stupid and or ignorant comment you have heard aty an airshow.
For me its from a couple of years back when the BBMF Lanc was landing some clown said.
Their is a Hercules landing now

If yo look on the RAF Mildenhall website, the ‘air fete’ link at the top has gone. It’s always there. I don’t think they will have another show there unfortunately….

I think the most stupid comment of all has been left out. This one is in use anually not at an airshow but as the reason for one not taking place again….. The USAF statement that the Mildenhall show is not happening this year due to operational commitments. Strange that they’ve been using that since May 2002, they’re just being their usual paranoid selves.

My aunt and I were at the Battle of Britain airshow at Duxford in 2000, and as the mass formation of Spitfires and Hurricanes went overhead, she said “Makes you proud to be British, seeing that.”
Blimey my wife must be more technically minded then. Even though she hates aircraft her comment at the Moenchengladbach airshow years ago really surprised me. As the BBMF trio arrived in their usual formation her comment was that the sound of the engines made you proud to be British especially as they were so old and still running 😀 😀

At an airshow at Duxford last year I heard a young child of about 7 years of age, what aircraft he was looking at. His mother turned and said to him “it’s an aeroplane”. This infurriated me as she obviously missed a great learning opportunity for her son. So I started chatting to him about the various aircraft on display, what their roles were etc. It amused me more when the lady said to me “what you choose to come here?”. I said “Yes I do, I love learning about our history and the aircraft on display”. I have even been known to threaten my husband with going to Duxford by myself when he had a cold! (Yes, their are some female out there that do love aviation, but my weakness is not retaining information about the workings of the different types of engines!) 😀
Sorry this turned out to be a long post but you know what women are like! 😉
Regards,
Snaps
Good on you lass, just goes to show that not all women are deadly alien life forms 😀

Sadly, I never had that pleasure. The most noisy I ever heard was a Mirage 2000 (and a Viggen) which both went ballistic just over me.
Oh, and I forget a Czech Mig23 Passing over my head in full reheat. Makes you shake.
An example of perceived noise levels-1 Lightning in full reheat=2 F4 Phantoms ditto.

One of my favorite moments was in 1992 at an airshow…Chuck Wentworth had flown one of Javier Arango’s WWI replicas to the show. I believe it was the triplane. Someone was making stupid untrue comments, and right in the middle of them Wentworth popped out from in front of the airplane, and proceeded to correct the man. It was classic.

Well, let’s see if I can pull a few stories out of the vault…of course there’s the golden moldy oldie about a father and son watching a Confederate air show somewhere in America and they watch the B-29 taxiing past, the kid asks his dad “what kind of plane is that, Dad?” and the father replies “Well, that’s an F1F1.” (For those who have’nt seen her, the CAF’s B-29 displays her name ‘FiFi’ in large letters on the nose)..my own photographic partner Denise on our first jaunt to England asked our host “Why do they put targets on British planes?”…almost got us taken back to Heathrow for a premature trip home…..this same girl announced to me that she’d JUST heard that the CAF B-26 ‘Carolyn’ had crashed in Texas….TWO YEARS after it happened…
I know I have more but I can’t think of them right now…

The B52 missed the airfield because of some poor vectors from ATC that required a 5g bank to get back onto the runway heading (so not their fault then). But it was still funny when I saw it 🙂
Oldtimer
A very nice set of shots, I think it caught everyone by surprise with its rate of climb (well to 10 feet anyway).

Well, Aaah seen a Bleriot Fly
With apologies to the Crows song from “Dumbo”.
Here’s my take on a low level highlight as DB takes a 6-7 second flight.
Another one for the record books – from the public side o’ the fence

This year the B-52 flew all the way from the USA to display at Farnborough but unfortunately flew to Blackbushe by accident and displayed there instead. They even have dedicated navigators on board.

A few years ago at the BAe Lostock families day, PA474 flew over and one woman in the crowd (who I presume worked there) said “so where do our missiles go on that then?”

I remember the show, and he was off to do a flypast at a military show in spain but developed a problem and came back early if i remember rightly.

😀 This is not a silly comment but it made me think; Many years ago we went to Mildenhall [i think] and the the SR71 was flying in for a flypast and the commentator said that the aircraft would be over the Isle of Wight before it could turn round and come back.I think he was referring to where it would end up if it used full power, but it certainly made me think,WOW What power. 🙂
On a slightly related note, I remember another Mildenhall show (god I miss those… 🙁 ) where the F117 carried out a series of passes in the early afternoon before departing away. The commentator mentioned that he was off to Spain for a flypast, and would be back later!! 😮 Nice work if you can get it! 😀

Best comment i ever heard was not on an airshow, but when doing some operational spotting at Soesterberg.
Two blokes were watching the aircraft flying (the USAF F-15s were still stationed there), one knowing just a little bit more than the other, and eager to impress his chum.
Enter an NF-5 coming in to make an overshoot.
“Look, an F-16”, the smart guy says.
Which is IMHO totally acceptable. It’s a jet, it’s grey, it’s pointy, the lot. There are plenty of subjects around i am sure i can make far sillier comments on.
That NF-5 is shortly afterward followed by a Dutch AF Fokker F-27 coming in to land.
“Whoa, another F-16!” the smart guy says.
Everyone suddenly got quiet and started looking at him as if he were a total idiot.

I do believe it was an adult, yes. Shame the person that said it was behaving like a child.
I’m at a loss as to what the said child was doing inside the perimeter fence though.
That is so irresponsible – being inside the perimeter fence. Whatever next !
