Lowestoft air show

The Lowestoft Air Show takes place Thursday29th/Friday 30th July. Unfortunately I won’t be going to either but for those that are within easy travelling distance and haven’t been before, it is a great day out.

Details are here:-

http://www.eastcoastfestivals.co.uk/air_festival/airfest2.htm

Be warned of the traffic jams though as 400000 are expected to attend the two day festival. The weather looks promising too.

On the basis that this is an old, old thread, I have closed it – please post in the newer thread now operating.

The Air Show is on today and tomorrow, last year only 1 in 4 threw a ยฃ1 in the bucket for this ‘free’ air show. Apparently the Vulcan 558 is making an appearance, it is supposed to be sunshine all the way, hope you have a good time and let us see plenty of pictures aye?:p

They said 420,000 (whether that was for both days I don’t ); if everybody gave a ยฃ1, I think they would have been happy;

The festival is saved and will go ahead next year ๐Ÿ™‚

Sad thing is that while the crowds were good in excess of 420,000 visitors the amount of money counted so far equates to 12 pence each ๐Ÿ™

Well, that’s another yearโ€™s festival over with, and what a nice 10th show it was too.

There were some minor alterations to the appearance times and the American contingent gave prior warning that due to operational needs they would be missing.
The Seahawk must have had technical problems as the Sea Fury flew on its own, nice display.

Thursday was hot and clear with the threat of rain but this held off. Friday had a sea mist with some inland haze making it hard to locate and see the aircraft.

Thursday, the RN Lynx landing at the old radar station at Corton I think the owner must have been an ex serviceman as the Lynx only touched down briefly and then took off and we had the pleasure of them doing its routine in front of all the holidaymakers. It then landed and shut down until its display slot. Went somewhere else over night and then arrived back to the radar station ready for the afternoon display on Friday. Did not go on the Friday.

Did not see the BBMF Hurricane on the Friday unless it did not join up for the trip home.

I do not know how much money was made but there were close on 150,000-200,000 in the crowds on Thursday, I just hope they all put a pound in the buckets towards next years show!!!

Does Snapper know the history behind the old radar station at Corton by chance as I cannot get much info on the net?

Did anyone join the friends thing or got a programme yet? I lost the form and probably cant go now as I had to bail my brother and sister in law of a cash flow problem so all my train money is now in the fridge!

Just wondering what the final list is

The roads have been diabolical for months now – and no end in site. My advice (I live here) is to do as said above and take the A143 via Haddiscoe etc and come in through Somerleyton or on the A12 via Yarmouth. Usually park and ride systems on the Yarmouth road too. You will NOT get in from the south end on either the Ipswich or Beccles road without long delays – even without the airshow it’s a ******* right now.

I go south of the bridge and keep going, hitting the beach south of the Claremont pier and just past the beach huts – can’t say if it’s the best view but it’s a larger area of beach and not as crowded.

Search back a few years worth of threads to find me and my stepladder there…I’m at mums and the connection is so slow I can’t be bothered to do it myself.

Looking forward to it!! believe parking is a massive issue  anybody local have ideas? ๐Ÿ˜‰

It depends on where you are travelling from. Because of the sewer pipe problem I would use the North end. This would be difficult if you are using the A12 from Ipswich, or if travelling via Bungay then use the Gt Yarmouth rd A143 and turn right at St Olaves via Somerleyton (the birthplace of the Hovercraft)

Aim for the wind turbine on Ness Point and just sit on the sea wall or walk back over the Bascule bridge and join the heaving crowds on the beach or prom with prams pushchairs etc. It depends on what you want Anna, pictures or just seeing the flying.

For those of you who are thinking of the rail option the following extra trains will be loco hauled and will feature proper rolling stock and more seats! The traction for those that are interested will be Cotswold Class 47’s top ‘n’ tail. ๐Ÿ™‚ Full diagram included for any cranks! ๐Ÿ˜€

0915 5G92 Norwich Crown Point – Norwich Station ( Empties ) arr 09.33 ??
0950 1G92 Norwich – Lowestoft ( Actual train, you can ride on this! ) arr 10.27
1040 5G91 Lowestoft – Norwich ( Empty stock movement, no rides ๐Ÿ™ ) arr 11.17
11.57 1G94 Norwich – Lowestoft ( Actual train again, again you can ride ) arr 12.34
15.58 1G93 Lowestoft – Norwich ( Actual train, for the early leavers ) arr 16.35
16.50 5G96 Norwich – Lowestoft ( Empty stock returning to Norwich, no rides ) arr 17.27
18.00 1G95 Lowestoft – Norwich ( Actual train, ride home having enjoyed your day ) arr 18.37
18.55 5G95 Norwich – Norwich Crown Point ( Empty stock returns to yard ) arr 19.13 ??

All this is subject to the usual railway shambles but this is the plan, but don’t kick me if it’s wrong. ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

Take the train, Anna!
(Are there any trains left in the UK away from the main line routes?)

Some of the display aircraft normally operate from Seething (lighter stuff) or Norwich (BBMF, jets).
Might be an opportunity to see some of them without the crowds.

Just a thought for your sailor friend.

The flight line is keep clear of all boats with only the safety vessels. The marinas are usually full. Has he a mooring booked?

B.P.

Thanks for the info.

I called him up to see if he was aware of this and since I last spoke to him he’d found out the situation and with nothing booked the idea has now sadly been scrubbed.

Oh, well. Maybe next year.

As for this year, back to the traffic!!

Willow
