It’s beginning to bug me a bit. Spit XVI TD248 has full invasion stripes on the top and bottom of the wings while only partial stripes on the lower fuselage.
I saw some images from another airshow and it has a P51D with the same set up, full wing stripes and partial fuselage stripes. Forget that the 4th FG markings it wears date to later in the war when the stripes were gone, just like forget that cut down fuselage Spit XVIs were’nt around then.
Can someone show me a wartime photo of ANY aircraft carrying full wing invasion stripes and partial fuselage?
I’ve always understood it was full invasion stripes, then removed from the top of the plane, then removed from under the wings and finally from under the fuselage last.
Why is this so tough for the warbird painters to get right? Or did I miss something?

Some of the pictures I’m attaching all show partial fusalage stripes but it is unclear in some of them if they are full wing.

You can tell from these that it’s from the time frame where the word came down to paint over or remove the upper wing and fuselage bands, leaving just the lower bands for the ground guys to see, so it’s late June early July.
That makes sense. But it makes little sense to leave them on the wings and not the fuselage.
