Want an EE Lightning???

We have recently been on a parts recovery mission and came across the remains of a Lightning. You will see from the images that she is in extremely poor condition but still has her engines fitted, any takers?? 😮

The large camo section behind the wing looks like the remains of a Buccaneer to me!
There was a buccaneer fuselage on station around the same time, I wonder could it be the same one? Plazz

Plazz, you are on the mark my friend, indeed, the section you see is that of XW528, formerly of Conningbys dump, not much to rescue from her, just a few pipes and a crew amp (the only items that were not damaged).

Was this the Lightning that made way for Conningsbys viewing area? (See photo I took below)
There was a buccaneer fuselage on station around the same time, I wonder could it be the same one? (See other photo I took below)

Well, she may have done in W&R15 but by W&R17 she had come from another station, so which one do you believe!! Just to prove that it is the remains are of XN774, I have attached an image which shows a section of one of the wings, this serial number was found on several (very bent) panels on or around the hulk pictured above.

Yep – I agree (I was tired – still am, didn’t carry on looking when she was said to have been scrapped, elated at the fact that, having not found her by searching the Binbrook entry all the way back to the 5th edition, she was in fact to be found slightly further down or over the page under Coningsby having been there on decoy/dump duties since at least 1980, etc…;)). I believe that the majority of the airframe was scrapped and the nose carted away to…somewhere I can’t remember.
Still, we thrive on those mistakes made by other people, do we not?

Well, she may have done in W&R15 but by W&R17 she had come from another station, so which one do you believe!! Regardless, her current location is to be kept under wraps for now, as I have said, if you want to know where she to be found then PM me, not my decision but it is that of the people who own the yard.

The aircraft is/was XN774 which was removed from Binbrook’s dump sometime ago.
Only the top engine remains in the fuselage section, the lower engine can also be found on site but is mangled beyond recognition and such, it would be waste of time and effort trying to recover anything from it, apart from some of the HP compressor blades.

If you want to know the location, then please PM me, but please do not post its whereabouts on this forum.

W&R15 has XN774 as having died on RAF Coningsbys dump by 9/95; I was merely enquiring about the location in an effort to pin down or back-track and find the identity – some people like to know what has survived!

Peter – Kelvin was chatting to Newark last year ref the Mig-21. I guess he is talking to you guys as well! Not really relevant to Boscombe it would fit in better with another collection of like types.

Spoke to him a few days ago and he now using central heating boilers to give him the flame effect! Seems even Kelvin started to worry about the gas, as for the MIG21, keep watching….

It was a private indivdual that had 2 rear tail areas. One of which had red lights fitted, the other had gas burners fitted to simulate the afterburner!

That Lightning section you mentioned sounds like the one that the AALO have or did have at Brunty.

Or it could be something to do with the group rebuild various Lightning sections into a ground running T5.

I’d guess that a proper location might be undesirable at the moment.
It won’t be in the current Wrecks and Relics because there is no cockpit – but it may be possible to back-track and trace the identity, given the location (but not neccessarily!).
Of course the id might already be known to Buccsociety…

I wonder if in twenty years time we will be talking about why no-one snapped up the remains whilst we had chance, aka Failsworth etc !!
After all the Frightening is already regarded as a classic , and the Brigand / Swift etc. certainly were’nt back in the 60’s / 70’s when the now well scrutinised pictures were taken !

Hi all

Could yeald some spare parts but there isnt too much left. Shame most of the jet pipes has gone i could have done with those, are both the engines in there to top one looks very battered.
