A photograph for 'Black Knight'.

Although in the background and partially cropped, here is shot just in, showing the Ormond Haydon-Baillie Seafury in its Canadian markings. The photo was taken at E.Alton Illinois in June 1971.

The Spitfire is the well known SL721/N8R, then with owner and restorer Bill Ross, of Chicago.

We can all wince at the Brown and Green livery and the ‘C’ type roundels but asked where he got the scheme from and he replied: “BBMF Coltishall”. That is how it was pre BoB film times, the BBMF had there XIXs approximately in this livery.

EP120 Wattisham 1968 – also a bit strange, eh ?

I would have said RAF Henlow 18 April 1968.

Prep for the Battle of Britain film and you can see that it has already got the under surface paint applied.

Nice to see it in colour, I only have B/W. Could I twist your arm for a higher res image?

Paint scheme is so so. Grey and Green with ill proportioned type C roundels and an early incorrect fin flash.

That was the ‘swinging sixties’ – if you could remember what you were doing then you weren’t part of it.

Black Knight

Whilst rummaging for a Hudson shot I came across this.

17 May 1974 at Biggin Hill. Taken by my good chum the late Ron Cranham.

and the MkV AB910 as well, although still coded QJ-J or similar

I have a feeling that the Hurricane LF363 also carried this scheme for a while. I have some slides taken at Coltishall in the mid/late 60s and early 70s. I’ll check it out when I get the chance.

AB910 – Well with an A type roundel on a Mk V that was fine. You had to go back to the mid 1950’s to find AB910 in Brown and Green with a pseudo C type roundel but without the outer yellow.

O H – B

Black Night,

Not one of my photos I’m afraid so I acannot advise on the T-33. I bought it for the Spitfire but remembered your O H-B interest.

Thanks Mark 12. Was the T-33 there or was it just the Sea Fury? I’ve been told that when Ormond raced that Sea Fury at Reno he was not only the pilot but the only ground crew. Must have been a very busy time for him.

Good pic Mark 12. I still believe SL721 was one of the nicest spitfires with its previous blue livery. I miss it and hope I may see it again in blue in the distant future. 😎
