I arrive at Prestwick at 10 am on 8 July and have the rest of the day free. I am wondering if there will be enough preparations in hand at East Fortune for the air show to be held on the 10th to make it worth my while to take a trip out there with my camera (e.g. arriving aircraft). Unfortunately I shall miss the air show itself because my visit is primarily to attend my daughter’s graduation most of the 9th then return to Sweden at 10:20 on the 10th, dammit! If I had known earlier about the air show I would have changed my hotel and flight bookings!
Can anyone tell me if they think it would be worth me taking the train, bus or whatever to EF and back on the 8th? Some travel tips on getting to EF would also be useful!

BTW, Radararchive, I didn’t see any mention on your web site of such airfield radars as ACR7D and CPN4, which I trained on at Locking in 1959-62. Golden memories!
There’s an awful lot not on the website, simply because I don’t have the time or resources to make it all available on the web. I have almost 5,500 photos and that is only a small percentage of the overall Historical Radar Archive photographic collections. There is no way to put all that material on the web without spending a fortune. 🙁

Damn, for a second there I was considering not going to Legends, but then I remembered the anticipated 12 Spitfires…..! (drool!)

more likely to be the ScotAirways Dornier 328

Curses, I’ll be otherwise engaged in Edingurgh (Edingurgh!?) city all day Friday, especially in the afternoon! Flying out from there Saturday morning, though, perhaps if I got there early enough I could see and photograph something, any good photo spots there for me, not having any transport?

Woah, woah, woah! Dornier? As in the big tri-engined flying boat thingy??

Most of the displaying aircraft will be going into Edingurgh Airport, some aircraft ariving on the Friday afternoon. PROVISIONALY for Edinburgh are I believe, Tutor, Catalina, F86 😀 , Hunter 😀 , TornadoF3, Sea Vixen 😀 , Hawk, Spitfire 😀 , Dornier, Su26, Hurc. Red Arrows may be there Friday (usually). Other, smaller items are based at Archerfield with others arriving direct to EF on the day eg BBMF.

Not a bad idea, that. Maybe make a day of it and pop over to see LA198, too?

Thanks, dodrums, no I’ve never been to EF before and the route sounds time-consuming, bearing in mind that I have to get back into central Edinburgh afterwards. The coffee idea sounds good, in fact I will have to grab some lunch somewhere that day. Could you please PM me a place and time? I expect I will end up photographing airliners if anyone takes the bait on the busdrivers’ Forum.

I’ve never visited the 602 museum myself, maybe we should arrange a forum visit? They have a page at http://www.2175atc.co.uk/602.html

I believe it was originally started by the local ATC squadron, but has expanded since then. I’ve never been, but they seem to have a very good collection including bits of the Heinkel He 111 shot down on 28 October 1939 – the first enemy aircraft to crash on mainland Britain since WW1.

Didn’t realise there was a 602 Squadron museum! LA198 should have gone there! 🙁

They changed the flightline for the airshow a couple of years ago, and now use the runway for parking. So, as RadarArchive points out, nothing operates from EF for the airshow. As for the static, they tend to get only one or two aircraft in addition to the collection, and they usually arrive on the Friday. The collection itself is always worth a visit, you’ve been before haven’t you?.
To get there from Prestwick: train to Glasgow Central, train from Glasgow Queen St to Edinburgh Waverley, then bus to EF. The EF website gives the following bus info.
By bus
Service no. 121 (Don Prentice Travel), runs between Haddington and North Berwick approximately eight times per day. Regular bus services run from Edinburgh to North Berwick, and an express bus service from Edinburgh to Haddington. Call Traveline 0870 608 2 608 for timetable details.
In Glasgow all we have is LA198 at the Transport Museum. The 602 museum at Hillington is only open by special arrangment.
Pity you are arriving midweek, or I could have met you and given a lift up to EF. But if you are stopping in Glasgow then drop a line and maybe meet up for a coffee.

I wondered about that, hence my new thread on Commercial!

If you do decide to visit East Fortune, you would probably be best to hire a car. Getting there by public transport isn’t especially easy, particularly if you are travelling all the way from Prestwick. By the time you get a train to Glasgow, train to Edinburgh, train (or bus) to North Berwick and then a bus to East Fortune, the day would be just about over!

There was one year they had the black Hurri and pink Spit from Breighton in the hangar on the Friday prior to the show. I wish I’d known about that, ‘cos work would have been out the window! 🙁

Thanks, RadarArchive. Perhaps I should spend the day “spotting” at Edinburgh airport instead! Or are there any other aviation-related (particularly historic) places I could visit within easy reach? What about the museum itself at East Fortune (and related travel tips)?
By: RadarArchive - 2nd July 2004 at 06:50
To be honest, I very much doubt it. Almost without exception, the aircraft participating in the Festival of Flight do not operate from East Fortune itself but a variety of airfields in the area, including I believe Edinburgh Airport. There is therefore not much to see at East Fortune before the start of the airshow, although they are having an outdoor screenign of Casablanca on the Friday evening.
I’ve never been to East Fortune the day before the airshow, so I can’t guarantee that my understanding of the above is 100% accurate, but certainly it’s not like Leuchars airshow in that aircraft arrive at the airfield prior to the airshow day.
