Does anybody have any news on these two aircraft both of which had problems at Southend, epecially the Spitfire which had an engine malady ?

They were fitted that way for some reason long before I got there. PM is the last so no more hammering or funny insertion tools for us,and no I wasn’t at Fairford.
Great, glad to hear it 😀 😀

Oh well whatever the delay in getting them healthy again and back in the air will be worth it. The good thing is that the pilots all lived to tell the tale even if they dis suffer cuts, bruises and pulled muscles

PM631’s engine is being checked out by Retro and hopefully it should be back with us in 4 to 6 weeks, however because she was brought back by road we require new wing bolts to be manufactured. We are hoping if all goes well to have her in the air before the end of our display season.

Well, if you don’t hammer them in you stand a chance of re-using them again! 😉 😀
I’ve seen the drawing for your insertion tool, for hammering the bolts in! Why do you need one of those??

So what is the procedure for testing an engine for shock loading? I can see that a sudden stop can put an awful lot of stress on the whizzy roundy uppy downy bits inside the engine, so what would be checked? Con-rods and crank for straightness, stress fractures in the block, mains and big-ends for overload? Is it a complete strip or something that can be done easily?
Just out of interest loike…

Is that an earthing lead attached to ‘631’s tailwheel in Robbo’s second shot? Not seen that before, is this normal?
Apparently standard practice across the RAF. Since the BBMF work to all the same standards as the rest of the service, they get a grounding wire too. Most sensible.

For what its worth, the BBMF Lanc plus a Spitfire thingy (funny shaped tail, airfix sky blue paint) past over North Oxon heading due South at about 19.00 today.
Seen their (?) DC3 about a lot lately – has she been at Coventry?
Oh, and about two RAF’s worth of fast jets going back and forth; back and forth; day and night. What are American cousins up to right now?
:dribble: back to bed :humph:

Eddie,
She is being rebuilt at Personal Plane Services, Booker. I know that one of the chaps looks in here from time to time (you know who you are 😉 and did you enjoy Legends on Saturday BTW) so you never know you might get a reply from someone who knows all about it
