Cornwall Aero Park/ Flambards

Here is another random nostalgia/ old aviation museum sort of thread..

It was while volunteering at the recent Air Atlantique open day (if anybody was there I was sheperding guests into the main hangar from the car park and doing the crowd control during the Shackelton engine run, lots of props to keep an eye on, good job there was a team of us!). During a quiet moment later on, I was able to get a look around the Shackelton interior, including visiting the observers position in the tail cone and hurdling over the spar 😀 . I was reminded of the substantial Shackelton fuselage section at Flambards, near Helston and RNAS Culdrose in Cornwall. I have not been there for years and all reports suggest that the aircraft collection has all but gone.

Does anybody know what happened to the Shackelton? Is it still there or has it gone to a museum or private collection, it was a rare early version (T4  ) and included a fair bit of fuselage centre section, and had survivied years of abuse from curious visitors (including a very young version of myself  ) reasonably well.

PS For people with long memories I think it was once part of the Colerne collection, though that was way before my time.

Also if anybody has any photos of the other (mostly fleet air arm) exhibits at Flambards it would be great to see them, I never visited with a camera. 🙂

Cheers. Will

The Scimitar is now somewhere in Southampton, and the Skyraider is currently not looking too good at Yeovilton.

Amjet operated an ex Australian example in the U.S until quite recently. I should imagine it’s still airworthy. I believe the may be a machine in Australia
which can still fast taxy.

Are there any Sea Venoms still flying  (I guess they would present an unrealistically costly restoration given the availabilty of nice crated nearly airworthy swiss single seaters), that said, one would make an amazing sight in the sky!

PS, Does anybody have a picture of the Flambards/Jet Age Museum example with all of its markings, pre or post repaint? (Or any other Flambards pics, they dont make theme parks like that anymore etc  )

Cheers. Will

As Flambards is right next door to RNAS Culdrose, (and they have an Airday on Wed 14th July) it should be quite easy to check it out shortly.

Still there last year and likely to remain due to the way the building was built up around it!

In the latest WR Edition 19 published May 2004 it still lists WG511 as a nose section last noted Jan 2004 so I should think it is still there unless anybody knows differently. When I visited in 1998 it was definetly still there but could easily be missed as really it was just the cockpit section which had been built around. Sorry no pictures but I do have some of the other exhbits outside.

My 1994 edition of W&R says:
WG511 Shackleton T.4 ex-Colerne, St Mawgan, MOTU, Kinloss Wing, MOTU, 120, 42, Nose, reporting date 12/93.
Has anyone got a more recent edition of the book? Of course you have!!!
