Hi,
I will be going on holiday to the Rockys in the USA at the weekend. I was woundering if anybody knew of anything aviation related to do out there. I will be travelling with my brother, and we have a car, and no itinery to speak of yet so I am open to suggestions.
We are starting in Denver, and will probably loop down to the north rim of the grand canyon, and then up towards Utah, so anything aviation related in these areas can be considered.
Thanks in advance
Jonathan

Welcome to my neck of the woods, Brych!! Also while you’re in Denver, if it’s not too late to write you, stop in at Centennial Airport in south Denver on the weekend and see some of the boys playing with their toys…numerous T-6’s down there, Joe Thidodeau’s Sea Fury ‘Sky Hawk’ and his P-51D Mustang ‘Crusader’, lots of Staggerwings and twin Beeches (you just missed our Skyraider which was used in Flight of the Intruder, it was sold on to Houston)…we have a fly-in at Front Range airport at the end of June (26 and 27), LOTS of stuff there including all the above And Bill Greenwood’s T. Mk. 9 Spitfire is usually in attendance…Plenty to see and do in Colorado…hope you have a good trip!

Hi,
Thanks for the replys. The Wings Over the Rockies Museum looks like it should be possible, as does the museum in Peublo. Much appreciated.
Thanks again

Don’t miss the Wings Over the Rockies Museum at Lowry, which is a suburb of Denver. I was there in January, and they have a very nice collection, including most of the Century Series fighters, a B-18 Bolo, B-1A, B-52, B-57, a race modified F4U, C-45, etc. You will need very fast film in your camera though.

There is a small museum at Pueblo, Colo…some neat stuff including a rare B-47.
Also Planes of Fame has (or at least had) a satellite museum at the Grand Canyon Airport.
Heading south to Phoenix, there is Deer Valley about 15 miles North of the city. There was a contractor there flying F-8 Crusaders and A-3s on test work (now ended) but some of the planes may be there. And there is always good stuff at Meas’s Falcon Field the CAF Wing there has their B-17 there. Don’t forget the two airports at Chandler…Municipal and Memorial…Memorial is hard to get to but is the base for the firefighting DC-7s. Also, east of Chander is the old Williams Air Force Base…the nice static display collection went away when the base closed, but there is usually some weird stuff on the flightline. On the way to Tucson is the home of out to pasture airliners, Marana…but security is tight there as it’s a Army National Guard attack helicopter training facility as well as a training center for some security forces.
And if you make it to Tucson, Pima County is a “Must see”. It’s next to the “boneyard” at Davis-Monthan AFB. Pima County has daily tours of the base for those who otherwise can’t get on the base.
In Ogden Utah, north of Salt Late City, Hill AFB has a very nice museum/airpark.
There is lots great sights to see…some of it even has nothing to do with aviation. Have a great time!!

Rockies.
Hi
there’s a smallish but quite interesting museum at Peterson AFB, Colorado Springs. It’s got a bit of an ADC theme with interceptors and air defence missiles.
From there you can look across at Cheyenne Mountain which contains NORAD. There used to be tours around there but I think they were by long prior arrangement. Since 9/11 probably not!
Nice part of the World.

Also check out the USAF Ac. in Bolder there are a few planes stucj on polel.
