Air Show today at Mickedala, Halmstad, Sweden

Heavy showers and cloudbase of 500 ft threatened the flying display, but slowly the clouds cleared away and the display proceeded, half an hour late and with disappointingly (but safe) flat displays.
Here is the first batch of pictures (I’ve put the Gripen into Modern Military, where it belongs).
1. Visiting DC-3 SE-CFP “Daisy”, Fridtjof Viking with a load of passengers, presumably the Veteranflyg group from Stockholm.
2. Draken taking off.
3. Unmistakeable planform of the Draken
4. Landing, note the tailwheel firmly on the groung – a three-pointer!
5. The Sk12 Stieglitz was the first aircraft to land at Halmstad when it opened, and now the Gripen (borrowed from F7 Såtenäs) is the current training equipment.

It is usually my brain operating at twice the speed of my fingers that causes the problem!

Strange how this quick reply system sometimes distorts the words and numbers that I type!

I know restorations take some time but 200 years!

Just found a titbit on the Tunnan “Gul Rudolf ” (Yellow R) in the 2/04 edition of the Svensk Flyghistorisk Tidskrift, the journal of the Swedish Historical Aviation Society: “The (new) engine’s ancillary components have now been tested and are being put onto the engine. The first test flights following this extensive renovation are expected to take place in May (2204).” I haven’t heard any more since then, though.
As far as I know, the refurbished B.17 has not been flown outside Sweden, Mike.

In September 2002 Gul Rudolf had only 7 hours engine time left. That’s probably been used up by now!

Thanks, shame about that..!

That is no problem. I already could see some nice shots of a swedish stiglietz from you. I certainly hope you can send some more in the future but the photos shown here of other types are great for me too.

So thanks for sharing them!

Thanks, Stieglitz – sorry I couldn’t get a better picture of the Sk12 Stieglitz but there was a constant crowd around it, and later my camera battery ran out! Infuriatingly it was just before a low, slow pass by the Gripen! I had intended to go back into the hangar to get more shots. Even more infuriatingly on my return to Gothenburg 2 hours later the weather was glorious there!

Thanks papa Lima. These photos are a great publicety for the unique swedish aircraft history! Very suprising to see the superb saab b-17. The old jets are nice too of course! You must be very proud to have such nice planes flying there.

Good job!

See under Other/Service (I thought the link would take you straight to the table, but it goes to the home page)

Ray Jade, it would appear from this table that Drakens were not based at F14 Halmstad at any time . . .

J29 Tunnan Gul Rudolf

The Tunnan was there today, but the rain was heavy as I passed by so I didn’t get a photo – here’s one taken earlier (not by me).
I am trying to find out the engine info. and will post any developments.

Were Draakens based from Halstad in the mid-90’s? I seem to recall them on a visit to the Gummifabrik.

Nice shots of ‘exotics’ 🙂

Nice pics and some very interesting aircraft. I really admire the Swedish Air Force’s efforts in preserving historic aircraft in airworthy condition. Do you know if their J29 is still flying (heard that the engine needs an overhaul as it almost time-expired).

Tack så mycket, Papa Lima 🙂

Nice pair of trousers, eh?
I think they were used as dive brakes too.

I was going to ask if the SAAB B17s U/c retracted then you posted your photos of it flying! Never seen anything quite like that before!

1. Saab B-17
2. ditto
3. ditto
4. There was a Vampire there too!
5. The mighty Viggen, which stayed firmly anchored to the ground.

More Halmstad pix

1. Privately-owned Hunter SE-DXL taking off – compare to the Lansen.
2. Definitely not a Lansen!
3. But this one is!
4. Also taking off – they mostly disappered into the cloud after take-off, then did very flat displays.
5. The restored Saab B-17 arriving – performed a wonderful display later.
