My View of Duxford's D-Day Show

Evenin’ all.

As ever, I won’t try and compete with the great ground to air pics posted by the others elsewhere, not comment on the content or traffic. My day was very worthwhile. Why?

For a start, getting to meet (albeit VERY briefly) Lt Col Hayden Richards. Yes, I’ve shaken a hand that held the stick over Normandy 60 years ago to the day.

And the Grace Spitfire. Getting to stand next to it on the day, was special. Both Lt Col Richards and ML407 have changed a bit, but they are both (in very!) different ways living history and what it’s all about.

It was Duxford’s P-47s that were over Normandy that day, not Mustangs…

PS Many thanks to Tracey Woods, IWM DX PR for the historic photos of the IWMs.

Maybe if I turn the Centipede upside down and crawl under it he won’t find me? 😉 😀 🙂

As regards the painted buildings, thanks for the note, Airgage. I admit didn’t know, but I was suspicious that it would probably not be 1940 paint. The buildings at RAF Bicester still have staining in the mortar from that period, but no paint.

Could we sell the paint chips to the film fans do you think? 😀

Cheers

Spot on Airgage…some of the buildings were even used by some of the film crew as accomodation during their time at Duxford. From your knowledge of the buildings, I am sure you will have seen the original hooks for the camoflague nets still firmly set into the brickwork, and the original letter boxes, and the original boot scrapers…and yes yes, I WILL get those pictures up 🙂

James…you’ve given me an idea…anyone got a chisel handy? 😀

JDK

Nice to have an audience – hope I wasn’t in the way of your pics.

To say that you were in the way might only sound jealous. I was however concerned that should I point my camera in your direction, a budgie might land on your finger and put you off taking some fine up close and personal shots.

Sorry Albert,

I’m missing something here. Er – I get the press pass anyway, ta, and I thought that people would like to see a different view of the day. Having made my contributions to the tailback thread and the other piccies threads, I hope my views are registered! Don’t think you or I get a pass for posting here… What’s the beef? (Chiz)

Meeting Col Richards was rather worthwhile. Let’s not diminish June 6th, 2004 eh?

James as you may know but others maybe don’t. The paint on the N/side buildings is of 1968 B of B vintage, not earlier. If you look it is only on buildings which were in camera shot…..

Prior to 1968 the buildingn were either plain brickwork or as with most of the south side MoD whitwash white!

Nice alternative view

Shhh! Don’t steal his thunder! He’s doing a wonderful PR job for IWM and they’ll give him another press pass for this!! 😉

Hi Merlin,
Sure, I’ll see what I can do tomorrow. There were quite a few I posted some time back (‘Cockpits Thread’ IIRC) but there’s always room for more.

Nice to have an audience – hope I wasn’t in the way of your pics. The tweed is almost period garb.

Hi Will, glad to see you are familiar with the real 50s hero! Thanks for the clarification Yak Rider. Going by your Avatar, does that qualify as ‘inside information?’ 😀

Cheers

ML407 is credited with shooting down the first German aircraft on D-Day, a Ju88. The Spitfire was flown by Johnny Houlton of 485 NZ Squadron. Some of his original groundcrew were at the Annual Gathering at DX on Saturday. ML407 is now back in the original D-Day colour scheme.

James

I noted you taking a few photos of the a/c on the line from close quarters. A few with camera aloft in the general direction of the cockpits.

Any chance of posting some of those?

Thanks Ashley & Arm Waver.

It’s not always the big things which stand out. I was on the North Side as the commemorative silence was called, and it was quiet and private. Just me, Duxford’s buildings and the birdsong.

Thanks for the alternative views of Duxford… Take so much for granted when I go I don’t tend to notice the little details…
Look forward to the pictures Ashley

James…re the flagpole, I believe it was something to do with the base…apparently it is intended to be returned, I must chase up on this, as I think it is very important that Duxford’s flagpole should be on display.

Now I’ve moved, I really must prep and then post my Officers’ Mess and north side pics.

And thanks for posting this thread James, I enjoyed the pics:)

Some of what it is all about is the details:

The P-47’s aerodynamically ballanced aeleron.

The Victorian Bath Tap on the Rasta Cat (TM).

And a good ‘ol copyright notice on the Wildcat.

As well as the paint on the buildings on the North side, rather than the tarted up ones on the main airfield.

Remembering and forgiving.

The second picture was from an amazing selection of photos on display in the upper gallery of the Land Warfare Hall. I guess lots of people missed them. If you are going back, don’t miss them!

Does anyone know why the flagstaff opposite the original enterance was taken down a few years ago?

Oops. But it very important that it’s not all static. Even where there’s risks. Hope LF will be back soon!

It’s getting the general public interested in aircraft that is important about these days. Even if they aren’t historic aircraft!
