Homebuilt Sopwith Pup

I remember reading a news item in one of the aviation mags a couple of years ago about a guy who was building a WW1 fighter (a Pup IIRC) in his garage. The article had pics showing the fuselage frame with engine attached and it seemed as though the machine wasn’t far from ground running.I seem to remember the builder was intending to finish the aircraft to an airworthy standard, although I’ve not heard anything of it since.Does anyone know how the project is going at present??

The family are still very keen not just to have the aircraft fly but also to dislay at airshows in Brendans memory. Their engine arrived a little while ago and I expect the long held dream of the Pups first flight will become a reality within the next 6 to 9 months. It will be a fantastic tribute to the many many thousands of hours of Brendans efforts.

Fingers crossed and good luck to all those involved.

Thanks for such a quick response Melvyn, although it’s certainly not the sort of news I was hoping for.It certainly looked like a first class piece of work, here’s hoping it will fly one day just as he hoped it would.I’m just sitting here having a beer,so I’ll raise the glass to Mr.Goddard.

This was Brendan Goddard who was in Southampton. Brendan died of a heart attack just before the Christmas before last. He even had Beatles music at his funeral. He was a nice guy.

He had planned to put a 80hp Salmson on it despite several people telling him it was simply not man enough. Although the Le Rhone on the originals is 80hp it is much bigger horses! He was thinking about putting on a Warner but had problems finding one.

His widow still has the aeroplane and apparently has a lead on an engine but it is taking time to come through.

he made a good job of it though.
