Forum meeting
I was planning to be on Pegasus bridge at midnight on the 5th! – hopefully may see you there.
We are staying in Port-en-Bessin & are planning to see the Para drop & flying display near St Mere Eglise during the daytime on the 5th but will try to get over to Pegasus Bridge in the eveing.
Most of the restrictions seem to apply on the 6th – and some sort of permits are required for the larger international ceremonies. Am sure we might be able to blag are way in with some franglais.
Any gen from anyone in the know much appreciated.

High moggy,
Am off to Normandy on Thursday – have you come up with much gen on what is going on over there – the official websites (Normandy memmoire etc) are a little vague & hint at some fairly draconian restrictions for travel on the 5th & 6th.

I know they slapped a load of ZITs and similar on the airspace. I hadn’t considered that they might do the same on the ground.
I picked up from Cosford earlier in the year a sort-of programme, but it’s on a bookshelf waiting for me to read it on the ferry.
I’ll be at Pegasus Bridge at midnight on the 5th if I have to crawl through the bushes to get there.
Her Majesty and the vets are all going to be at Arromanche on the Sunday. We may give that a miss.
That’s the best info I have, anything else that anyone can contribute will be greatly appreciated

Flying a Citroen
Boo. Better to be there, albeit ground bound, than not there at all.
Cheers

We are leaving UK Wednesday morning for Normandy.
Unusual for the Yanks to get there first :p

Nice to see a note about this ceremony at Madingley, it is indeed very moving and a slaute to the men of the Mighty Eighth. Will be of intrest to see how many actual veterans of that war are in attendance for the event. Had the great pleasure of spending the afternoon one day this week with a B-17 pilot from the 100th BG! He later went on to fly in the Berlin Airlift,Korea and Vietnam. He mostly remembers the time in the UK and flying with the 100th over Germany. Speaks with great emotion about his feelings for the UK and his experiences with the local children near the base during the war. Nice touch to have the Salley B make a pass over the resting place of more Eighth veterans than any other in the world. Been there many times and will be off to Normandy this Sunday on a newer Boeing to honor all the men of D-Day!
Maybe someone can post some photos of this moving ceremony for all here.

Well hopefully the letter and route map sent out to every airfield for miles around will make sure nobody embarasses themselves.
… and the follow-up phone call from a nice man at Lakenheath to all the airfields today, just to make sure …

Bet the NOTAM doesn’t stop hapless Cambridge spamcan drivers (Not you Steve) from blundering through.

Reckon you’re probably right, you should see some of ’em. 😉
Looks like a fabulous tribute, that’s my Bank Holiday Monday morning sorted out then. 😀

Bet it doesn’t.
And they are not even embarassed, they just sail blithely through with their thumb up their bum and their brain in neutral. Doubt they ever know until they do it through a monitored airspace. (Great Yorkshire Airshow 2003 for example)
You were at Shuttleworth for the last sunset weren’t you?

[QUOTE=JDK]These would be F-15 ‘fighters’? Rather than F-15 ‘bombers’? So we don’t need to worry about any F-15 driver ‘friendly fire incidents’ with a bomb hang-up then… (See Yorkshire, hole in, sorry, by USAF.)
Above is trivia.
[QUOTE]
Hi, James.
You’re right, it is trivia. But it has no place here. Too many British families realise just how trivial ‘friendly fire’ incidents are. The rest of your post is spot on.
Commemoration is important. The 8th AF were an integral part of the Allied bombing effort mounted from these shores. It is right that not only their sacrifice be remembered but also the service of those who returned safely to the US. I’ve never been to Madingley when a ceremony was taking place, but, on your own, or with a group of like minded friends, it is an intensely moving place.
There’s an old wartime song, ‘Bless ’em all’. Never has that sentiment been more true than it is today.
Regards,
kev35

It is important that commemorations happen and happen properly. A “Thank you” to Sally B, crew, supporters (not quite enough cash) and the USAF, crew, and US Taxpayers (Quite enough tax cash I’m sure) that this happens.

Sally B will find Maddingley.
Be interesting to see if they can lead the F-15’s to the right location, or if Ely Cathedral will get an unexpected flyby!
