Arado Ar.196

All,

A little while ago there was a thread about this nice looking bird and the one in Poland (I think) was mentioned but the NASM’s one wasn’t so I thought I’d dig out my piccies of my trip to the Garber Facility during June 2002 and post a piccie.

If anyone wants to see any more I’ll dig some out

Phil B has it credited to ‘N. Franklin collection’

Thanks VP,
It’s a ‘Real’ photo in my collection. Not sure of the original pics origins, and it’s not great quality in the first place. What’s Phil Butler’s attribution?
Cheers

James,

‘War Prizes’ has the same photo as in your post (No4) on P67. The caption states that it is probably AIR MIN 91, which was surrendered at Schleswig-see, and that the photo was taken at the MAEE Felixstowe. AIR MIN 91/VM748 was sold as scrap to John Dale Ltd on the 14th November 1947.

I don’t think so either, James. The 2 in the USA both came from the ‘Prinz Eugen’. If one was tested in the UK (I’ll have to have a peek in the Eric Brown and Phil Butler books when I get home), presumably it was chopped up to make pots and pans soon afterwards.

Unless, of course, it’s still lurking in store somewhere………

I have a strong feeling that this one is Norwegian – recovered after the German surrender and used briefly after the war?

Let’s just hope when the smithsonian get around to doing the arado they tae a conservative approach if possible – that paintwork oozes history!

Well, here’s one (maybe the same one – but I don’t think so) in action – Can we:
a) Have the Smithsonian’s restored?
b) have one flying in airshows? (A man can dream…)
