Vimy Replica.

Hi all
After the kind things people have said about my posts last week and after it having been mentioned at Old Warden on Sunday. I’ve been trawling through my photo archive, which is basically several plastic bags and a couple of boxes of negatives and prints stretching back about 25 years.
Today I’ve found these. I don’t think they’re twenty years old more like about 10 years I think.
I think this aircraft is in the States now.
I do remember at the time it was Chevrolet powered and while it looked OK it sounded—
Well not as nice as it should have. A bit like a Skyship Airship if anyone ever heard one of those.
I did like though and wish it was still flying here.
All the best
Andy. 🙂 🙂 🙂

The Vimy could operate from much shorter strips than Old Warden! Remember it has a very large wing area, and therefore alot of lift. I saw it at Old Warden and it could have taken off and landed twice on the runway easily.

Quite shocked to see the Vimy operating out of Old Warden. If the DH88 Comet can’t fly from there, how on earth did they allow the Vimy to?

IIRC the prototype Vimy was built at Bexleyheath, about a mile from where I live. Talking of the hanger, I seem to recall they had to dig trenches for the wheels of the prototype to run into, so that they could get it out of the hanger where it had been built without dismantling the hanger.

These were taken at Biggin Hill on 15/6/96. Can’t remember when I bought the signed sticker, but it was probably at Biggin in ’96.

I was amazed at the shortness of the take off run… Remarkably short for the size of the aircraft. Even the flex-wing microlights at Cranfield seemed to take longer to get up!

Yep – I agree. We were at Woodford in June 1996 and the Vimy was there. Never forget the weird sound those engines made.

The Vimy attended Farnborough in 1994, 1996, and 1998. The big year was 1996 when it attended many arishows around the UK, and all the details for that are on the website the team have: www.team-merlin.com

Farnborough Vimy

As a guess, I would say that the Vimy was at Farnborough in 1994. I was working nearby and caught the end of each day’s display during the week, with the Vimy looking a little lost amongst the F-18s and Flankers, then on the Saturday she left on the journey to Australia.

I also saw it arrive at Brooklands where it was temporarily based – quite a moving morning. The Chevvy engines did, indeed sound interesting, but impressive nevertheless! It was also at Farnborough just before its treck through Africa, half-painted silver!

I saw the Vimy at Farnborough, but cannot remember the date and in Oshkosh in about 1998.

Bruggen 130.
I took all my pictures of the Vimy replica at Old Warden.
I can’t now remember what year it was or which particular show.
I think I only saw the aircraft once though.
I’ve added three more pictures below.
I include the last one because it did a fly-by with the Bristol Fighter and although the picture isn’t great it’s the only picture I have of the two together.
Andy 🙂 🙂

Hi Andy
I know mine were not taken at old warden, so if anybody out there
can tell me what other shows it did it would be a great help.
sombody must know what year it flew at old warden.
Thanks Phil.– 🙂

Whats its current state?

Lovely photos Andy, keep them coming, I’m sure that you’ve got even more gems like these in your photobox.

Cheers,
Rob

Whats happening with it? is it up for sale?
