Kigsford-Smith and Southern Cross at Cambridge

As a part of my research into the Cambridge (NZ) people who went into the Air Forces during the war, I decided to look into local flying activity around Cambridge prewar. It turns out several famous aviators visited over the 1920’s and 30’s, and these are important events as it was usually the first glimpse of an aircraft for many young boys who went onto become Air Force pilots, etc.

Anyway, one of the aviators who arrived here was Charles Kingsford-Smith in his famous trimotor Southern Cross. I am trying to pinpoint the exact date it arrived here, so I can then look out the news reports. But I haven’t got a clue where to start. I have searched the web for an itinery of his New Zealand visits but had no luck finding a Cambridge reference.

Does anyone know where I might find this info? Does a museum hold his log books? Would they even have logged flights in those days? It was fairly informal, no airport, he landed at the racecourse.

One clue is Edgar ‘Teddy’ Harvie was friends and I believe at one time even a crew member with Kingsford-Smith. So if there was a flight to and around NZ when Harvie crewed, which year was this? I ask because Harvie was from Cambridge and perhaps the stop here was impromptu and for him?

If anyone can assist with the date that Southern Cross may have visited Cambridge I’d appreciate it greatly.
