G-AAAA DH60G Gipsy Moth

Anyone know what the story behind this aircraft (c/n 805; later possibly X5038(G) ) was?

According to the civil register, it was de-registered in 6th February 1940, reason “Cancelled by CAA”. The ownership is given as:

“REGISTERED OWNER DETAILS IN ARCHIVE
ADDRESS DETAILS IN ARCHIVE
UNITED KINGDOM”

Was it owned by someone special?

But why thestrange comments on the register? Most de-registered early aircraft just have blanks rather than cryptic comments.

As Von Perthes post stated,I think it ended up being used as an airfield decoy. The government department responsible for the creation of decoy airfields, army depots etc was given the cover name ‘Sound City Films’,and a number of pre-war civvy machines were passed on to this spurious film company for use as decoys.

Proves my memory still works sometimes.
I was about to confirm it but I see I’ve been beaten to it.
The book doesn’t say how long he owned it for but, I think, in later years he had a Puss Moth. I suppose other aircraft he used may not necessarily have been his own, just company property.

Correct it was DH’s personal moth. On July 25th 1928 he set a new class altitude record of 21,000. I guess he owned it until its impressment?

I have a suspicion it used to belong to Geoffrey de Havilland. I’ll go look at some books.

I don’t think it was owned by the “AA”. Just a regular “pilot”

‘British civil aircraft registers since 1919’ by Dave Peel (Midland Counties) has G-AAAA as to ‘X5038 11.39’. The Air-Britian X1000 to Z9999 volume has ‘X5038 ex G-AAAA, used as decoy.’

If you don’t manage to get a reply here, I’m sure Stuart McKay at the de Havilland Moth Club will have the answer. He is very resourceful. He’s at dhmoth@dhmothclub.co.uk.
