I remember them bringing parts of a wrecked Spitfire on a trailer to Leuchars airshow some years ago.
Was that Blue Peter, and have they still got it?

I stayed in the area for Summer holidays for 5 years in the 90s. The signposting for the museum was almost non existent. I complained to the tourist board but nothing was done during those years. I hope it has since. The D & G is a super little museum run by just a handful of enthusiasts.
Thanks for the photos, brings back memories.
I remember the Meteor sitting on its tail because its engines had been removed!

P7540 – The Loch Doon Spitfire

A lesson in how not to do it. 🙁

Unfortunately recovered 15-20 years too soon.

This would be prime material for today’s ‘replica’ builders.

This machine most certainly could have been rebuilt to flying condition and failing that it deserves better than it has received to date.

Untouched and in as recovered condition it would have a value today in excess of £100k. A preservation society can do a lot with that sort of money.

And the lesson is if you do not know how to fix it – oil it, preserve it and leave it.

Thanks for the update Ken,

This recovery was one of the first I read about (or was trying to as my grasp of English was almost non-existant then at 13) when I started buying FP and the other magazine I will not name here.

Another push that started off my interest in aviation archeology, incurable it later turned out to be.

Cheers

Nice pics. Any update on the Loch Doon Spitifre II restoration?

They are skinning the central section of the fuselage, but it looks like it will be a long time. Unfortunately it was too cramped in the polytunnel to get any photos, will try to get some hsots next time I’m down.
