Hollywood to film BoB story?!!

Here we go again! There’s an article in the Daily Mail today about a film to be made in Hollywood about the BoB American contribution, in particular, Billy Fiske. Bill Bond from the BoB Historical Society has already commented on the potential inaccuracies that may well be occurring (eg Billy Fiske flew Hurricanes, not Spitfires) and I just hope we don’t get a repeat of U-571 et al, where Hollywood deemed that America appeared to win the war single handed. That is not to decry Billy Fiske and his comrades in any way for their contribution to us. You have been warned!

A bit of a story for you.

Sad but true I typed my business name “airgage” into the bbc search engine.

Amongst the entries was one to a site in the US ( http://warbirdsofww2.tripod.com/downloads.htm ) that included links to a whole series of aeroplane video clips I had loaded into a now redundant website. I had forgotten about them. Also funny as the guy who runs the site never asked my permission!!

Historically they are of poor quality and may or may not include sound (unlike the original footage) as they date from a time when 1mb was the limit of tolerance of any video download!! Also at this time I was experimenting with streaming video in mpeg/realplayer /avi formats. The MS wmv format was not available. Things have changed since then and if I get time I may re-compress some of my material in a better format.

Two that are currently of interest were the spitfire and the meteor blue note as published on that thread.

If you go to the above link and scroll down you will find a number of clips under a link to my site. Don’t bother with the link to the site as it now advertises my business and not aeroplanes……feel free to look at the clips though!

Chris

It’s of interest to me – if I can get it to run! 🙂

Daz, the point is that a film (of whatever quality/storyline) paid into the coffers of the operation of that aircraft and the buchon which was also being test flow that morning.

That has to be a good thing.

I thought as it was the first test flight of the aircraft in its film colours it had a bit of interest, whatever.

Daz, it shows a Spitfire coded RF-M taking off, doing a wingover and landing. The Spitfire experts can probably tell you a lot more! To me it looks like an early Merlin-engined aircraft, but I stand to be corrected!

As it is a realplayer file I’d suggest real play Mr Snapper.

Hi Snapper!
The movie worked on my RealOne Player software, if that helps.

That’s not nice Lancman. He told you why he didn’t put sound on….

Very nice Airgage. Now perhaps you’d let me ino the secret of what software I need to view it?!

Oh, joy; another Hollywood lash-up that distorts all the truth, with the same couple of Spitfires and Merlin-engined baddies again.

The Billy Fiske article was in AM February 2004 issue, page 20, and there is mention of the forthcoming Paramount Pictures film project, to be called “The Few”, starring Tom Cruise (who else!).
He seems to have claimed several probables and damaged, but according to the article no clearly recorded and definite shoot-downs. He was nevertheless one of “the few”.

Anyone know which studio is behind the project, would be a good indicator of the kind of film we are going to see.

Who cares? Lets just enjoy the flying. Hell, I enjoyed the Pearl Harbor flying for what it was – not what it was supposed to be. Or what it wasn’t. Or whatever – but you know what I mean!

As far as Hollywood is concerned, a dollar-generating storyline will always take precedence over historical accuracy. We will have to wait and see…

The problem is that while Billy Fiske was a brave and interesting man, IIRC, he did not shoot any aircraft down, nor become an ace. I simply can’t see the film-makers (any film makers) saying: “great let’s film that” without him downing some of the enemy.

Sorry for being so behind with the news guys – I had heard rumours but seen nothing in print previously (and I don’t normally read the Daily Mail!). I have to agree with DazDaMan and hope it won’t turn out how many suspect it might.
