Mosquito NF Mk II

Hi,

Probably a real Mosquito specialist will have to be found to answer this.:) Neilly?

Some of the Mosquito NF II’s had their secret AI Mk IV radar equipment removed for offensive nightfighter (Intruder) missions.

Does anyone know if No 23 squadron on Malta had any Mosquito NF II’s with the AI Mk equipment?
So far, I have only seen photographs of 23 Sqn Mosquitos without the equipment. Like DZ230 “YP-A”.

I’d love a list of 23 Sqn Mosqiuto NF II serials and codes.
I might make a model;)

TIA, Transall.

Hello,

Peter Rudd replied that 23 Sqn’s on Malta did not have the AI radar.

So, the radar bits will have to stay on the sprue, I guess.

Thanks to everyone who helped.

Cheers, Transall.

Hi,

Thanks for all the replies.

I’m going to E-mail Peter rudd as Neilly suggested. If he can tell anything more, I’ll let you know.

I wonder if the situation on Malta was as in the UK (the squadron had both types of NF II but could only fly offensive operations without the secret equipment) or if Malta was considered too risky and only aircraft without the equipment were allowed to be stationed there.

Cheers, Transall.

Neilly,

Would I be right in thinking that Malta-based NF squadrons such as No 23 were forbidden from flying over enemy territory with AI-equipped aircraft? This was certainly the case with UK-based squadrons, and I assume those in Malta would have faced similar restrictions.

Hi Transall,

The simple answer is Yes. 23 Sqd. went to Malta as a night fighter & then doing more intruder sorties. A good little book to get hold of is The Red Eagles by Peter Rudd.

Haven’t a clue – but note that a lot of wartime issue pix had aerials and other secret things censored, and quite a few were censored in such a way that it is difficult to tell. Ok – and others weren’t!

Sorry if this is telling something you already know…

Flood.
