If memory serves me correctly, it was Norman flying the helicopter into the smoke to take survivors off the burning βSir Galahadβ, a true gentleman and if I can still use the word a hero!
He was a really nice guy and is still missed.

Norman Lees
I remember many years back Norman Lees bringing a Mustang into Kidlington, presumably for some work to be done.
Myself, as one of a group of student pilots, helped him push the aircraft back into a hangar and he answered our Q’s patiently. Seemed, as you say, a top bloke with time for people. Still got the photo.
Anon.

A great pilot much missed.
I am Pretty sure it was Norman who at a Biggin Hill show late 1990s arrived in Dave Gilmours P-51 with the Yellowjack Gnat on its tail it was quiet a site coming over the Valley as i was arriving.
Its strange to think PV202 is now flying again and i am still having reservations on this but i feel Norman would probably want her to fly.

A nice man and a great pilot, very much missed.
I met him just once at North Weald in Gary Numans company in the Harvard display days, seemed to be a thoroughly nice chap.

I saw the aftermath of that accident.
I had booked an exhaust noise test for my Caterham Seven sports car that day. A Lancia car club track day was scheduled and the pits were open so I thought it would be a good opportunity to drive down to Goodwood to ensure my exhaust did not exceed the strict noise levels that are applied at Goodwood. By chance, I happened to check the news on BBC Ceefax that morning and saw to my horror that a Spitfire had crashed at Goodwood. I immediately phoned the circuit to check whether it would still be OK to come down for my noise check. I was assured by the “office person” I spoke to that the track was still open for business. So off I went. 45 minutes later, I arrived at the track to find that it had been closed for the day. Obviously, my noise test was off. I drove around the boundary of the airfield and the sad sight of the Spitfire lying inverted on the infield at Madgwick Corner was plainly visible.
A sad day.

Thanks for the reminder, Colin, is it really four years!
Norman was a personal friend, and unfortunately, one of many friends who have lost their lives in aircraft over the years.
There’s nothing more I can say……………….

For a reason which is apparent on another thread, this accident, on this date, has always particularly saddened me.
Sadly missed. π
