I have been asked to paint a picture of Lancaster LM135 of 166 Squadron which operated from RAF Kilmington (now Humberside Airport) in 1944. The aircraft was lost on a raid on the night of 10/11th of June in 1944 with all crew being killed in the crash. The aircraft had only accumulated 28 hours flying time when it was lost. I am painting the picture for a relative of the Wireless Operator whos name was E.G.Smith. I know that the squadron codes for 166 Squadron were AS but cannot find any information about the actual aircraft letter/callsign (AS-*). I would also be interested to know what colour the designation letters were on 166 Sqn aircraft. This picture is to be taken to the village in France where the aeroplane crashed and is to be presented to the inhabitants to mark the sixtieth anniversary of the incident as many of villagers still remember the incident well. Any information would be very appreciated as I am working to quite a tight timescale on this one. Thankyou in advance for any help you may be able to give, my email address is theobald_pete@hotmail.com.

Just a small point, the name of the RAF base they flew from was Kirmington rather than ‘Kilmington’. Good luck with the painting. 🙂
