Mustang Guessing game this time

And in part three of our mystery saga, we have a Mustang.

The questions are once again: Where, when and what was it there for?

Hi Archer,
Despite my rude remarks about Mustangs, that was a good one! The weather was about right for Arnhem, as it had been that ‘good’ in 1944. Let’s see what hapens for the 60th this year.

I guess it really ought to be Mike J’s turn – anyways, I’m happy to let him have a go; I’m sure there’s something teasing in his archive…
Cheers

Thanks for that Ant! I only dug out the photos this morning and couldn’t remember which Spit it was.

Oh, and its over to JDK for the next round I guess 😉

“Was this MH434 by the way? I cannot remember if it was and the photo doesn’t show enough of the markings.”

Hi Archer, that’s actually TFC’s ML417,painted in the markings she wore in 1944.She’s now been sold on to Tom Friedkin in the US.

The other Spit was MK732 marked as 322 Sqn. OU-U. Was this MH434 by the way? I cannot remember if it was and the photo doesn’t show enough of the markings.

The bombers (B-17, B-25(s?), Grumpy may have been there as well) were parked further away on the apron, with the collection of Dakotas, and the Blenheim was in a hangar on the other side of the apron. My job that day was marshalling the fighters around, so I didn’t get the chance to take photos of the other aircraft.

P-51 SE-BKG, in temporary Dutch East Indies markings just before engine shut-down. The aircraft was operated by the DBAF for two seasons on loan from its Swedish operator. During the first seasons these markings were applied using sheets of stick-on material. It looked pretty convincing (I think the shark mouth stayed on a bit longer as the owner liked that addition). The only giveaway was the tip of the spinner that quickly tried to revert to yellow! (The spinner was painted)

A bit late in revealing the answer, but the winner is……. Mike J

On 17th September 1994 the Duke of Brabant Airforce (Robbo found out that they were involved) organised the aerial side of the celebrations surrounding the 50th anniversary of operation Market Garden. A complete collection of aircraft was gathered at Eindhoven Airbase (home of the DBAF, the hangars way in the background should have given this one away) with the purpose of providing ‘air cover’ for the celebrations going on in several places between Eindhoven and Arnhem.

Now as you can see on the photo above, the weather was absolutely appalling that day. So what happened was that almost every sortie planned got cancelled. Three aircraft did take off, all with Dutch pilots who knew the area, but they returned pretty quickly after a few low flypasts (photo below), not having been able to find the column of vehicles that was recreating the journey to Arnhem.

The Thunderbolt was started, taxied to the runway but returned. The rest didn’t even try.

In the end it turned out to be a nice gathering of pilots, mechanics and members of the DBAF. The bar was opened early, the BBQ was set up under cover and somehow it got to be quite late before everything went quiet! 😀

..at the risk of making a complete pigs ear of it, and the Dutch East Indies scheme being not really relevant, would the collection of aircraft have anything to do with D-Day anniversary/ Dame Vera Lynn celebrations? some anniversary of 1944 + 50 or summat like?

…bms44….disappears trilling falsetto……’ther’ll be blue birds over….

17th Dec 2003?

Welcome to Mr D1ck Phillips, P-51 guru. – Hi D1ck, welcome to the forum. May I hand over Mustangs to you, officially? I’ve tied my best, but they bring me out in a rash.

Cheers

PS What lame brain thought up this pathetic net nanny software. Do you realise that a generation of children are going to go blind thinking D1ck is spelled with a numeral and bl@@dy has to ‘at’ signs in it? **** **** ****** **** and their parents!

Better now, thanks Doc.

You’re getting warmer Robbo! Now all you need is an event that was worth celebrating. Enough to get this Mustang, plus ‘Moose’, the P-47, two Spits, a Beech 18, Sally B, the Blenheim and four or five Dakotas together (plus probably a couple more that I’ve forgotten).

That’s the last hint by the way, if nobody’s guessed it by tomorrow we’ll have to move on! 😀

Good night all! 😉

p.s.: I couldn’t find it through Google, and I know the answer! 😀

mustang guessing game

This is indeed SE-BKG. I have a very nice clear side view of it, showing the SE-BKG under the left horizontal.

I don’t ‘do’ Mustangs

Ah yes, forgotten about that, sorry!

It is Dutch East Indies colours though, so that has the merit of originality

That’s why I figured it would make an interesting quiz object. The color scheme was short-lived for a couple of reasons, and therefore not seen by many. I’ll leave the question open for a little while longer and post the answer sometime tonight or tomorrow (now don’t you all go and wait for that!!! 😀 )

Thanks Archer,
Yes, it’s a Mustang. Worse, it’s a ‘D’ model. I don’t ‘do’ Mustangs.

Sorry, can’t play!

It is Dutch East Indies colours though, so that has the merit of originality!

Hmm, bit quiet here, so perhaps a hint or two is in order.

Robbo You found the original N3-615, your guess at the location and date is wrong though I’m afraid (and I wasn’t looking for which aircraft anyway! Figured that that was the easy part 😀 )
Ant No, not the SHF’s example
Slybird You are correct, however that was not the answer we were looking for.
Aileron Roll Haven’t seen that movie, but I don’t think it is related to this.

So, in summary: the paint scheme is not that significant to the answers, although it dates the photo (hint 1)!
Hint 2: it wasn’t a real airshow, it was a pretty significant date though.

Let’s see if this helps. Any ideas yet JDK?;)
