OK.
I have to have a revenge for a v. poor showing on the Mystery Cats thread. So Here’s a Spitfire pic.
Where and when and what was it there for?
The serial and which Spit it is should be evident, which will narrow it down a bit. (What am I saying? It’s a Spitfire – there’s more on Spitfires here than at Supermarines!)
Mark12. You are NOT allowed to play (yet!) And if it’s not picked streight away, I’ll give a clue or two.
Cheers

For those that know Croydon (you lucky, lucky people), the old control tower and terminal building are off to the right of the pic, about 1/2 mile down the hill. I think there’s a line of trees planted about where the Spitfire is in my pic, and the buildings behing it in the foreground are on what was the airfield up to the 1950s when it closed.

What for: The Croydon Airshow would’ve done, Croydon Anniversary Airshow was correct for both also.
More when Septic’s checked his files methinks!
(Note to self: Must check answers before setting quiz.)
I think 1988 is right i remember not being there but being at a Carnival in New Addington when the BBMF fly over and telethon was on the tv when got home im still puzzled by the building in near background the church not look familiar it maybe view towards west croydon,i live near the old Airport site but rarely go that way.

Yes but what are the answers? 🙁
Where, when and what?
Your winning nominees have given multiple choice.

Apologies
Skimmed through at speed and missed the last couple of postings.

Where – within 15 miles south of the Natwest Tower. Maybe Kenley.
when – 1988
what was it there for? That’s obvious, its a Spitfire, and they should be seen as often as possible.

And the winner is…
Robbo!
(Sorry to force you to come up with the full answer, but as Bograt had come in with a correct 1/3rd streight off, I couldn’t let you off the hook, could I?) Congratulations.
Special nomination for Bograt, who was quick, but didn’t give enough detail to win. (AS your teacher says, “Read the question.”)
Another nomination for WebPilot of a partly correct but schizophrenic answer! It’s not the Nat West tower IIRC, but Nestle’s, but it’s a while since I stared at those tower blocks.
Yes, it was good to have a show there, don’t think it’s possible now, on one of Britains’ most historic airfields, which is like so many others: closed.
Thanks to all who played; hope you liked exercising the grey stuff.
Now over to Archer. Oo Er.. What next?
Cheers

Hi Robbo,
Wondered when you’d appear. May I ask you to re-read the question?
The question is (or questions are):
Where,
When, and
What was it there for?

Bruggen. Good guess. No. Yup, thats what cathedrals look like to me too. It’s a church tower you spotted in the pic.
I did say nothing to do with the filming, and I don’t think they were at Charlton Park otherwise.
Cheers

Archer, you also had a fair stab at it. 🙂 No, you are wrong though. 😉 My revenge is therefore complete. 😎
I figured that if I didn’t even try you would be hugely disappointed. This is a subject that I cannot really compete in though, as I’m not that familiar with UK airfields. My guess was therefore constructed using Google.
I figure I at least got the year right, and perhaps Mark12 had it right when he mentioned Eastleigh. Now Google also tells me that PL983 was built there, so putting 1 and 1 together….. was there anything organised at Eastleigh that required a Spit to be in attendance during 1988??
By: JDK - 1st April 2004 at 18:48
Sort of square and office block like the Cathedrals in your part of the world Bruggen?
Tip. Wacking up a place with a grass runway* somewhere in the UK** isn’t going to get a win. Place, year and what was it there for please.
*Yes, this is true, and thus a clue.
**Not much help, but true too. No, it’s not East Fortune with Edinburgh SUDDENLY a lot closer, Daz!
