All time Favourite.

Well we’re still here then?
Yesterday I was under the impression that we were going to be Cyber hijacked.
Well, Luv-a-duck Guv’nor I thought that sounds jolly exciting.
Here I am with my cyber suitcase packed and we’re all still here writing about Bl**dy aeroplanes.
Oh well.

As things have been getting a bit heavy of late and we haven’t done something like this for at least a fortnight.

What’s your all time favourite aircraft?
And I want reasons—good sound historical/engineering reasons.
Not things ‘cause I like the shape.’
Mine for instance is the DH 60 Moth.
An aircraft that changed private flying forever and changed the perception of the aeroplane in the minds of ordinary people.
It’s also the most economical aeroplane that could be built around an engine of 80-120HP.
Well it was at least in 1925. Might still be today.
Anyway something to bash about.
All the best
Andy.

PS I’m doing this in revenge for my Fox Moth thread dying so quickly last week.

😀 😀 😀

Anyone remember Paul Bonhomme doing a sixteen point hesitation roll?
I ‘m sure he did one either when he played the joker or maybe another occasion, but definately in the TFC Spitfire XIV.
I had never seen warbirds do anything other than four point rolls
(not complaining though !)

It could have been 2000, i was only guessing. I know of someone who spoke to him after that display and he told him he didn’t want to land he was having so much fun, it was just the state of the fuel that made him land.

Paul Bonhomme did fly the XIV in the joker slot at legends 2000 as I was watching the video today. I’m not saying he didn’t in 98 because I don’t know, I wasn’t there.

Auster Fan,

I would have to agree with you there, one that sticks in the old memory banks is one Legends when Paul performed the “Joker” slot whilst the balbo was forming up – he certainly looked like he was enjoying himself

He got a standing ovation when he taxied by as I recall

Now the question is does any one remember which year that was ?

p.s. My personal favourite’s are Griffon-engined Spitfire’s or even Seafire’s, but if pushed would go for a PR Mk.XIX – perfection in PR Blue 😀 😀 😀

Since I got so much flak for loving a particular aluminium overcast bomber:D I have to say that my all-time favourite fighter has to be the Spitfire XIX…high-back five-bladed Griffon powered Spitfire.
Nothing evokes power more than that I reckon..
The huge prop with the long nose,…mmm…does it for me, esp with the Blue R/R colour scheme !!

Anyway, enjoy this pic…I love it…:) 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

There’s a really nice B-36 sitting in a hanger in Ft. Worth, Texas that desperately needs a home. At this point, I think anybody with a hanger big enough to house the beast could get it.

My favorite airplane is a little hard to pin down. Do you mean fighter? Ok, then it’s the P-47. Unless you mean Navy fighter, then it’s the Wildcat. But my favorite Navy fighter with bent wings is the Corsair. My favorite bomber is the B-17…unless you mean two engines…then it’s the B-25….unless you mean twin engine and single pilot, then it’s the A-20…..unless…..well you get the picture.

Actually, the C-130 is where my heart will always be. Followed in no particular order by the Wildcat, Corsair, P-47 and HA-1112.
But for pure fun and just a great plane to have, you can’t beat a T-6 Texan.

I prefer the D models with the 4 turbojets but that’s a nice pic thanks.

Now, you can’t say it’s not a beautiful aircraft !!!

Damn straight a bomber !!!

Have you ever seen “Strategic Air Command” ?

The startup and take-off scene of the B-36 at the start is legendary.

Even the Monogram 1/72 plastic kitset model is huge !!

Nah, it’s truly awesome, dunt care whatcha think…:D

Cheers

A bomber? No, you can’t be serious. You’re ALL TIME FAVORITE is a bomber?

OK, I’ll grant you it’s very cool to check the engine oil by walking in the wing. But a bomber?

I need some air.:)

Anyway, getting back to the subject of this thread…….

My all time favourite has to be the “six turnin’ an’ four burnin'” machine built by Convair 😀

Now, guess what sort of aircraft that is….
I’ll give you a clue….it’s very big and used to shake the houses as it flew over, even at 35,000ft…

Cheers

As Steve said, great post Kev,I can identify with what you say.I did my air experience flying with 6AEF at Benson in the mid 90’s,just before the Chippies were retired.Glad I joined up when I did and got some Chippie rides in. 🙂 The only slight snag was the fact that I filled a barf bag every time-oh well! 😉
Personal favourite?Just about anything that flies (even some of those eggbeater thingies,I need therapy I know!),I honestly can’t choose.

For all the ex-cadets on the forum, here is a nostalgic view taken at summer camp at Coltishall (1989). You can almost hear the blatter of the Gypsy-Major, as we sat, waiting to fly, watching the comings and goings of the resident Jaguars.

Kev, great post. Pleasure to read it, brings loads of memories back.

AusterFan, ArmWaver – yep, I’m another 5AEF boy. Still fly out of Cambridge today (when the weather behaves itself) but this time in soulless PA28’s. See why I want a Chippie…? 😉
