Did anybody attend the 50th celebrations in 1994, now that was sensational.
At the time, the BBC more or less covered most of the events live, but I never saw them as I was in France. I wondered whether some of their professional footage had ever been made available, I’ve Googled but can’t find anything.
I took a lot of web cam coverage myself but can’t play it back as my Video 8 masters won’t play on a digital format and the cost of putting them on disc is extortionate, though, someday, perhaps.
The thing is, much of my footage, particularly with regard to the flypasts were a bit, shakey and personal, and these things tended to sneak up on your when you weren’t expecting them to.
I recall the mass parachute drops at Ranville involving UK and Canadian Hercules, I was right underneath them.
I recall the US flypast heading for Omaha, but it took us by surprise, from memory, 4xF-14, Prowler, Intruder, Hornet, 1xC-17 and B-1.
The French supplied Pink Lady and a P-51 that I recall were skipping the waves off Arromanches.
The BBMF flypast over Arromanches I seem to recall was unusually ragged, then we had the Reds and a Diamond 9 ? flight of Tonkas.
Did anyone take any pics that day as I don’t recall anything ever being published on here.
I doubt whether any events will surpass what happened that year, but good luck to those who are going, my vet is no longer with us I’m afraid.
