When talking about the possibilities of a Heinkel 111 in the states it got me thinking about another aircraft, the Brewster Buffalo.
Years ago (mid nineties?) a Brewster Buffalo was salvaged from a lake on the Finnish/Russian borders. The Finns said it was inside their borders, but a russian team rised the aircraft apparently without permission. The aircraft was substancially complete, and looked very good judging by the pictures appearing in many of the historic magazines at the time. At the time it was for sale to the highest bidder by the salvage company. Since then I’ve heard nothing of it, and it appears to have all but dissappeared of the face of this earth. Last I heard was in 1999/2000 when it was supposed to be in a container in Dublin, on it’s way to an undisclosed buyer in the States.
Does anyone know the where abouts of this aircraft?

Sadly, I’ve a feeling that stuck in a container is about as far as this aircraft is going to get…..:(
Personally, with it’s known combat history, I’d prefer to see this return to Finland where it belongs.
Can’t really see this happening though…..:(

There was a great article about this bird in one or two of the last copies of Warbirds Worldwide (numbers 50+)
It mentions in detail the “dodgy” dealings involving her as I recall
Will have a look tonight to make sure

That’s a good site and answers a lot of my questions. I faintly remembered something about the ‘shadowy’ element of the story.
Thanks for the link:cool:

Still in the container on the Dublin docks:mad:
There will be nothing left when they finally open that container. But for that price I’m not really surprised:rolleyes:

Last I heard about it was a couple of years ago, when it was still in Ireland and up for sale at, wait for it, 4 million dollars as seen. Apparently the RAF Museum were interested, until they heard the price. To the best of my knowledge the asking price remains the same and it’s still not been sold. Hmm, wonder why.

Wellcome to the asylum/forum Finny:D 😀 I think we are a good bunch in here, but we sometimes forget to take our medicen.:D 😀 😀 😀
Thank you for the correction on the location of the salvage. This is how one’s memory can trick;)
Somebody else out there that knows anything?

Yes, I’d also like to know where it is and what is going to happen to it. I guess it will never be back in Finland again, where, IMHO, it belongs.
To be fair, it was not inside Finnish borders, but actually quite deep inside Russia, otherwise it would have been salvagged decades ago.
I have heard that the U.S. Navy Museum in Pensacola, Florida is about to make a deal by swapping it for a few P-3’s, which again could be modified to waterbombers, and thus be turned into money. Anybody else have any info on this?
