I am contemplating buying a new camera, preferably digital with the speed of an SLR. since having my equipment stolen at last years Eastbourne display I have been using an Olympus Camedia C.740 but dont like the delay on the image capture when taking ground to air shots. The camera I am contemplating is the Canon EOS 300D but I would appreciate any advice. Many thanks LaHarve.

As promised the “missing” shot of a Lynx:
Photo by JIR, Danish Navy Helicopter Service: He calls it “Breaking the Wall of Retirement”! (And he used a digital camera!) 😉

Thanks for the info. Yes, I too have a cheap HK “Nathan Street” special for my Nikon digital. Worked well for a while then, after about five or six charges, it started losing charge at quite an alarming rate, especially if the flash was used, or the self-timer. It’s about a year or so old now and good for maybe 15-20 (at hi-res) shots. Use it only as emergency back-up now and bought a Jessop’s look-alike.
Ah, but back in the “old” days everything was 1/125 at f5.6 (f8 if it was sunny) and we never bothered with batteries.

Well worth taking a look on e-bay.
The battery for my Nikon is nearly 40 quid for a ‘genuine’, a bit less for the Jessops generic, and £5.99 via e-bay from a nice man in Hong Kong who supplies one with a slightly larger capacity.
With two spares in my pocket I never have to worry about battery life.

LesB , the camera came with a Canon EF 18-55mm +Sigma 55-200mm lense, and I bought the Canon battery which as you said is a tad high priced. Hopefully the lense combination should give me enough scope ar airshows.

The Canon battery is a tad expensive so I bought the Jessop’s equivalent. If you have Windoze XP you won’t need all the software you get with the thing. As I said in a previous post, Windoze treats it like an external hard drive – but a card reader may be a better option.
The only limitation I’ve found so far is the lack of a cable-release facility. On a tripod, it is best to use the self-timer (10 secs) feature. If you use this, say for hangar displays, then move outside to take hand-helds, it is easy to forget you’ve selected it. . . this leads to a WTF moment when you then take a picture normally.
Oh, and experiment with the white-balance function, it’s worth getting to know just how this affects images.
Have fun.

Thanks to you all for your input, I’ve bitten the bullet and gone for the Cannon EOS 300D. Hopefully I will get used to it before Flying Legends, I took it to Duxford on Sunday and was quite impressed with the way it worked indoors and on the static outside, unfortunately I didn’t get a chance to get any flying shots but will try again over the Easter break at Duxford and Yeovilton. Posting a few shots from Sunday, starting with G-AIYR.

For “shooting” aircraft you must go for the SLR – types!
I’ve just missed a wonderful shot, because I thought i knew how to handle a Canon Powershot G3 (On loan from the air force). I’ve used it for 3 months and appreciate the excellent lens. It can take a string at around one a second – if it is happy to do so! Then “load” the pictures. But you never know the exact time it is “happy”.
It was a Lynx. The pilot retiring at 62 on his last flight. Two new giant firetrucks made a rather heavy shower he airtaxied through. That digital “B******” fired before, after and the blue sky when i looked to see what the hell was happening. I had left my oldfashioned Canon in the car.
I’ll go home now – get drunk – and hang myself. 😉
P.S. Luckily there was other photographers present. They thought they got some good shots. I will try to get them and post as a warning!

A mates D60 is mint, and up for £600 if anyone wants it. He’s getting two 10D’s. Auster Fan has first option (I pm’d him earlier). Anyone else interested? It’s hardly been used.

10D For sale
I know this is not really the place for this sort of stuff, but I am currently selling my 10D. It is in MINT condition, complete with all leads, manuals, software etc – in fact it is as new.

http://www.parkcameras.com/ I can recommend these people i have dealt with them several times. If i was you i would do a price check with them for the camera you want,i have a Canon d30 and i can only assume the 10d is awesome, and then go to your local camera dealer and hassle for them to match the price,DON’T pay over the counter prices, have a good haggle.
Good luck, let us know how you get on 🙂

I think you might actually be wrong Moggy. Close but no banana. My money worries START on Saturday.
Bummer 🙁
