Fatal New Zealand Warbird crash today

I just turned Teletext on and read this:

“Plane Crashes off Kaiaua coast
Rescue services are scouring the Firth of Thames after a twin seater training jet crashed on Friday morning.

One body has already been found in the wreckage of the Fouga, which crashed abvout 100 metres off the coast near Kaiaua. Searchers are looking for a second person.

The Fouga jet is a 50-year-old plane and is regularly seen in New Zealand during warbird airshows.”

Very sad indeed. For people outside of New Zealand, Kaiaua is pronounced like Kie (as in pie)-ah-wa

Errrr, what? It is not the middle of the year in New Zealand, it is March. We’re only half a day ahead of Britain you know.

From Associated Press Newswires

Former Olympic gold medal winner dies in plane crash

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) – Two people, including former Olympic gold medal-winning sailor Chris Timms, were killed Friday when a vintage twin-seat jet they were flying crashed on New Zealand’s North Island.

New Zealand television network TV3, citing police sources, identified one of the victims as Timms, 56, who won gold at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics in the Tornado class with Rex Sellars and silver in the same class four years later in Seoul, South Korea.

The other man on board the jet was named by police as Kerry Campbell, 57, chief executive of Ardmore Airport, where the plane was based.

The New Zealand Warbirds Association, which preserves and flies old military planes, said the aircraft was a Fouga Magister, a French training jet.

Ambulance staff at the scene said both were killed on impact.

The plane hit mud flats about 100 meters (yards) from the shore of the river Thames at Kaiaua, a small rural settlement nearly 600 kilometers (375 miles) north of the capital, Wellington.

Yes I saw the news, apparently it flew upwards into the clouds, and then was seen spiralling vertically after a loud bang but with the engines still running…

The other passenger was an experienced ex-Skyhawk pilot.

Apparently .hit the mudflats at high velocity

🙁 🙁 🙁 🙁

I just saw on One News that one of the pilots was Christopher Timms, a former Olypmic Gold Medallist in yachting – so a great loss to sport as well as aviation.:(

The other pilot has not yet been named.

Also, I flicked over to TV3 and caught a few second of the end of their item on the crash, and it showed Ray Hanna with his P40, which was in a Chinese scheme (yuck!!). Apparently the Fouga was practising for an airshow in Taupo this weekend, so it looks as if maybe Ray will be their? Anyone else se TV3’s item? Must watch the late news.

Cheers
Dave

Was a beautiful jet and was very graceful in the air.

Dave, was it going to be featured at Wanaka ?

Sad news indeed. I have to admit though when i read the thread title i thought was going to see that the Corsair, P40 or La9 had crashed, not that they should cast a side this tragic event 🙁
