At long last, as promised, I found and scanned the spread of photos of that Sunderland crash. Here is a scaled down version of the whole two pages. If you want better versions of individuals photos, please let me know. Source ‘Those Were The Days: 1940’s” Auckland Weekly News Press
Nice images Dave
I’m certain I saw some of these photos in the archive at Hendon a few years ago…

22/12/41
230 Sqn
T9071
Transit, RAF Kalafrana (Malta)
Took off for a flight to Aboukir Bay with 20 men onboard. Intercepted by two Me110s of III/ZG26 50 miles north east of Benghazi and had both starboard engines put out of action. The Sunderland bounced twice in the forced landing, damaging the starboard side, and the crew had to spread themselves over the port wing to stop capsizing. Just offshore at Ras Amt the Sunderland drifted tail first into a reef and broke up leaving the crew and passengers to struggle ashore where a group of Italian soldiers surrendered to them.

I have seen a series of photos of a Coastal Command Sunderland that crash landed into the sea off the coast of Africa. The crew included Kiwis, so the photos were published in the Auckland Weekly News, and in the 1980’s in a book of Auckland Weekly News highlights covering the 1940’s (they did several different volumes on different decades).
Anywya, the crew escaped and made it to shore and they watched the surf smash the plane to pieces. Great photos. I’d love to know more about it. I’ll try to track down the book and scan the photos if anyone’s interested.

You could try ‘Coastal Command Losses’ Vol 1 (1939-1941) £16.99 by Ross McNeill (Midland Counties). No doubt other volumes will follow soon, or else find someone who has a copy. Maybe you could get hold of a copy through your local library & the Inter-library loan service.
