Here’s one for all you Spitfire gurus!Does anyone know if this Spit is currently being rebuilt?I’d heard that the plan was to restore her to flying condition once again,but things have gone rather quiet.

Sorry to revive this thread but wondered if anyone on here knows if the rebuild is progressing or has it stalled? Their restoration website hasn’t been updated since March 2018

Saunders Aircraft brokered this deal.
My understanding is that TE566 is at the Aviation Australia College in Brisbane.
The ex Barry Coran Mk V LZ844, painted as “R6915” with long bearer, cowlings and four blade prop, is also I believe on site.
Without too much imagination I could envisage the ex Garry Cooper Mk XIV RM797 being in the vicinity – just a guess.
People seem to be a bit tight lipped as to what is going on but clearly a centre for Spitfire restoration is starting to ‘ bubble away’ in the Brisbane environs.

Canadair,
TE566 is now in Australia and is earmarked for a total strip, salvage and restoration to flying condition using all available parts that will ‘go again’.
In this day and age it is just a question of percentage.

This is an interesting thread, as it is not often images of a restored but subsequently destroyed Spitfire are available, and while very sad to see, if any loss of life was involved, the airframe remains are in one case substantial, and the other essentially nonexistent.
So, the question to those well versed in the structures:
I image that TE213 would represent from what I can see in the pic a viable rebuild project, and would thus be worth a considerable amount, however TE566 ( always one of my favorites) is by my guess destroyed, I cannot imagine what can be salvaged from that, perhaps the odd small wing component, but thats about it, so does this become an identity only? and if so what is the value of the remains? in fact does what is left qualify as an identity?

That was it. I hope they do rebuild her – it’s an unusual specimen of the breed 🙂
As an aside, someone once offered me the remains of TE566 a couple of years ago – dunno how or why. Needless to say I turned his offer down!

On a simliar vein anyone have any info regarding the late Jack Mallock’s demise in the Rodesian Mk22 that was lost in a CB whilst on a filming sortie in the early eighties. Saw the programme on the BBC many moons ago and would love to get hold of a copy(?), last sequence had to be about the most moving flying clip I’ve ever seen, quite something!

As I understood it, the sale of the SAAF Museum Beaufighter to East Fortune in 2001 was intended to fund the restoration of the Spitfire to airworthiness.

That was the stated aim at the time but since then precious little detail, or progress I suspect.
