I have splashed out on a new scanner and I’m in the process of slowly scanning my slides. I have these pictures marked done as Sept 93 but ‘m not sure that was when I took them. Some one out there may remember the show.

I preferred the Happy Jack’s colour scheme to Cutie.

Mike,
‘Happy Jack’s Go Buggy’ was the mount of Capt. Jack Ilfrey of the 79th Fighter Squadron, 20th Fighter Group based at King’s Cliffe. He also flew a P-51D of the same name. His final score was 8 enemy aircraft, all while flying the P-38. In fact he was the first P-38 ace in the ETO.
Regards,
Paul

Does any one know who ‘Happy Jack’s Go Buggy’ was a tribute to?

P 38 can look so odd from some angles

Few more from this show

Thanks for that. I have eyed up one or two of the slide scanners but as you say, is the extra quality worth the extra expense unless you are professional.

My scanner is an EPSON perfection 3200 PHOTO. It’s a flat bed with all the bits and pieces to do slides and film strips at high quality. My slides seem to come out better than negative film, but I’m sure that’s down to the film and not the scanner.
Normal flatbeds are not much good and some of the dedicated film scanners are too expensive. I was lucky and found an old style photo shop that scanned a slide for me on various scanners then printed it out. I basically made the choice of this scanner based on the quality and paid about a fiver more for the scanner than I would have at PC World etc. Well worth it for the service and quality advice
I could not detect much different with the dedicated scanner other than slightly better colour in the deep shadows. This would be important to a professional but not worth paying 2 to 3 times the price.

TempestNut nice photos. Is your scanner specifically for slides? What make etc? I have a (nightmare) drawer full of motor racing and aircraft slides that need sorting. 🙁

And, from the sound of it, your bottom out!
Mind you, how would anyone know the difference . . . .
(I have just been told “that is not very nice” – as if I didn’t know!)

Last for tonight, I have always found it difficult to photograph aircraft at Duxford in strong sunshine as we are on the North side of the Field. This was worse when using transparency film. Hence no decent shots of the flying.

Hi, TN,
If it’s when the Lizzie arrived, it was 18/6/95. I have an unflattering photo of me trying to climb out of the rear cockpit, after I’d stuck my nose in! By my mate Barry Foxwell. IIRC John Romain landed safely despit a bad (oil) problem, and he got an award sometime later for that…..
Cheers

I remember waiting to see both 109’s fly together, but we saw them take off together, then Black 6 went off to another show, and I seem to recall black 2 landing back with some form of engine problem. Mark was flying it at altitude and I was watching and waiting when he put the undercarriage down and came strait back in. This is touch down. Perfect precision. The prop was turning very slowly in coarse pitch.

99% sure it’s the Midsummers Flying Day, June 1995.
The Lizzie arrived from Henstridge(?) that day, and the Fury, Tumelisa, Sabre, all present in the photo were flying in the display.
The show video is superb 🙂
