Moehne Dam – after the war

My grandfather managed to snap some photos of the Moehne Dam after the war – in one from the valley you can actually see the scar from the breach.

Anyone want to see them? If so, I shall scan!

We “bombed” the Moehne in 2002 with three PA28s and two HR200 Robins. 🙂

Bombs gone? Abort, too right of track.

I remember the scar still being visible on the Moehne Dam in the late 60’s when I visited it

You’d need a heck of a lot of explosive, I would imagine.

My thinking was the effect of shockwaves on the stability of the shuttering and setting concrete and the workforce.

Actually, if I remember from what was mentioned in the film, the shockwave from the bombs would be absorbed by the water, hence the reason why the Upkeep mines had to sink beside the dam wall for best effect.

Right or wrong?

When ‘rubbishing’ the Dams raid critics remark that they were repaired in 3 months. I have also read that Barnes Wallis and others could not get Harris to bomb the reconstruction work.
I wonder what the effect would have been if bombers were ordered to dump their bombs in the lakes instead of bringing them back from an aborted raid. The combined tidal waves would surely have at least put back if not destroyed the repairs.

Okey-dokey, will get on to it tomorrow night when I’m not so knackered! One colour and two b/w. There’s also a shot of the castle which I think 617 Sqdn used as a rallying point on the run in, if memory serves me correctly.

Janie – he was stationed somewhere in Germany with the army, but not sure when or where.

I’ve got a photo my Mum&Dad took in 1959 of the Moehne Dam, and the breach ‘scar’ is still clearly visible then.

I’d post it up aswell if only the site would let me…..

Go for it Daz.
What was he doing over there? If you’ve mentioned it on a previous thread, just direct me there.
