I’d like to create a virtual display team – (although I doubt I have the skills to fly in such a team myself).
Using, say, MS FS2004. Does anyone else have a flight sim preference that would be useable in this way?
Would anyone be interested in joining, and displaying their virtual skills?
How about using Red Arrow Gnats?, Black Arrow, Blue Diamond or Blue Heron Hunters.
Or something new – was there ever a Spitfire or Hurricane display team?
How about using a variety of different aircraft – simultaneously or ? Whatever, this is very much an embryonic idea, initially just for fun – but who knows what could happen in the future?
I guess we’d need a few people – because not everyone might be available. Plus we would need a “camera” ship.
Am I daft, or is this a goer?
If we were ever put on a virtual display at, say, an airshow or museum open day – I’m sure I know of a sponser!!! But this is simply for fun right now. I want to see whether this is a good idea.
I can donate a website and maybe even an Internet server if required.
Cumon Guys & Gals, what can we do? This could a great idea for building up an even greater sense of community and team spirit.

Have tried formation flying in FS using Tiger Moths at only 90 knots multiplayer in the office here. It’s bloody difficult to keep a good, tight format partly due to poor interface between user and computer so good luck!

Bradburger,
I tried those settings for extra detail and there was no change.
Any other idea’s?

Bradburger,
Where did you get that MH434? I would very much like to have it!

🙂 If you play online in Forgotten Battles in Hyper lobby you can do formation flying,

Have a look at this thread,it may give you some ideas and inspiration:D

So Pilots and PC Virtual Pilots that are interested, PM me, and I’ll give you my MSN Messenger ID – we can then get a conference chat together and working out some of the details.
Darren, the exhibition thing is certainly something I have in the back of my mind for the future, but lets see if some fun can be had first of all.
Hey, just a thought, those of us that couldn’t make a venue, but could find the time to fly wouldn’t even need to be there, what with the power of the Internet & all.
Lots of things to consider:
Team Name – something to do with male sheep would be nice 😀 but not compulsory!
Platform (FS/IL2FB/CFS, etc)
Aircraft
Virtual Venue (Server IP, that kind of thing)
Maneouvers
Team Leader & other positions
Team size
and everything else I’ve forgotten or don’t know about.

Rob,
I’ve had a similar idea for a number of years, but never got round to do anything serious with it.
My idea was to have a virtual team that could visit events, based broadly on the Red Arrows. There would be 9 ‘pc pilots’ and the flying display would have been projected onto a very large screen, showing different viewpoints. Ideal for a ‘booth’ in a hangar instead of the usual bric & brac stalls.
Of course trying to find enough people locally who could meet up on a regular basis is nigh impossible up here. My brother and I did ‘fly’ a two ship setup, only at home though. Pretty good fun, but very demanding.
Anyway count me in, be it MS F2K2 or F2k4 or even IL2.

Ant,
I think you’ll find if you go to the Multiplayer Settings menu in FS2002, there is a section called ‘Visual Details’ that lets you set whether you see the animations etc of other players aircraft and they see yours. If they are not checked with an ‘x’ then you won’t see the other planes animations and smoke.

As for FS2004 being worse than 2002. Well I’ve found it does a lot of things better and am pleased with it. But as Rob points out, to get the best out of it you do need a system with a lot of Ram, Fast CPU and one of the beefy, latest generation Graphics cards.
In think there is scope here for an FS2002/4 team and a IL2 FB one judging by the comments so far. One things for sure though, the FS series will allow us to fly in an accurate enviroment if you have the right addons. 😉
Cheers
Paul

IL2-FB is a good choice, I have that too, and would be prepared to get the expansion pack.

I guess the answer to that lies in the power of your PC. FS2004 is quite processor, memory and video demanding, so a modern PC is a must really.

Best sim if you want to do formation aeros is IL-2 Forgotten Battles.
No Sea Fury though. If you buy the expansion pack that comes out, you’ll get a Spitfire Vb though, and there are LOADS of aircraft already in there.

I’ve been doing a 2 ship G-FURY aerobatic team with my cousin on FS2002. It’s one thing that takes a hell of alot of practice. We’ve been doing it for a few weeks now but only manage 1 or 2 days a week. I don’t like the fact that the props are still and you don’t see each others smoke. Bradburger, would these be visable in FS2004? I’ve heard so many stories that 2004 is worse than 2002 i’ve been abit wary of changing.

Rob
I’ve been thinking about this for a while myself now.
My choice would be FS2004 as it has improved a lot over FS2002 in terms of it’s visuals and the FM capabilites of it’s predocessor.
You could have any team you like! Modern Jet team or a Classic Jets from the 50’s or a Warbird formation team ala the Breitling Fighters. I volunteer myself for the latter. 😉

Using aircraft made with the Flight Dynamics Workbook and with Gary Summons excellent UK2000 Airport/Airfield scenery combined with the Visual Flight UK VFR photo scenery, you would have an envoiroment as realistic as possible in any sim available today. 🙂
I’ve always hoped that I’d meet someone when I’m flying online who want’s to do quick tailchase and some aero’s around Duxford but haven’t came across anybody yet.
I think with some careful organisation and planning, it would be a blast! 😀
