Is this a Short Sturgeon wheel?

Several years ago, the museum was give a pair of a/c mainwheeels.

On one tyre appears the following ‘DUNLOP’ & underneath that is ‘43952’.

On the wheel rim are the following markings ‘DRG No AH 8310 ISSUE 5 SERIAL No K128693/1 [this is followed by an upward pointing arrow] 9/53 * 27A 2278 RAYON [& underneath] 33×9.75 – 16 KER14N ISS

On the other side of the wheel rim it has ‘AH7737’, on the hub it has ‘NS 3966D’ & one of the ‘spokes’ it has ‘AH 7737 SM’

The other wheel has the same markings but underneath ‘DUNLOP’ it has ‘43936’

Hendon have suggested it could come from a Short Sturgeon. I did email the FAAM but never received a reply.

Attached is a rather poor photo of one wheel, the best shot I have to hand at present.

Can any of you FAA experten help us???

Geoff.

I’ve spoken to our curator and the Sturgeon mainwheels (two), in vgc, are available to swop for something more in keeping with our museum. Any interested parties can contact me & I’ll pass the offers on.

whitley_project, do you have an email address for him?

FAO Geoff

Why don’t you try David Hobbs at the Fleet Air Arm Museum – he may be able to find a home for your wheel. Maybe you can work out a trade.

Great – thanks Dave and David.

Odd wheels are always turning up and it would be great to ID them without phoning up Dunlop!

Dunlop have replied to my Email, and the wheels are indeed for the Short Sturgeon. In which case they are rather off-topic for our museum. If anyone out there would like them, I’m sure we would be open to a swop for something more relevant to the museum.

Hi David

Do you know where I can get a copy of the Dunlop wheel list please? It would be very very useful.

I have a Dunlop wheel list so I guess a Sturgeon rebuild is a possibility!

Thanks guys.

I have sent off an email to Dunlop Aerospace, with the details I posted in my first post. Let’s hope they can confirm what you say.

If they are Sturgeon wheels then I expect that they will be looking for a new home. Don’t suppose anyone has a Sturgeon they’re restoring, and which they need some wheels for? I’m sure we would be willing to swop them for something more relevant to our museum.

The tyre size should be 33 x 9.75 -16 , it’s definately Sturgeon if it has the number AH8310 on it.

Geoff,

You may care to write to Product Support Dunlop Aviation Division Coventry and quote them the AH number from the main wheel casting/machining. They maybe able to give you the fit straight off or pass you on to a retired historian guy who has all the details of numbers against fit. He has helped me a couple of times. I will continue to search for his phone number.
