Blue Angels Display at Finningly… awesome – especially the jet which flew directly over the crowd at what seemed like 50ft….

for me has to be milldenhall, when ian black did one of the last shows in a lightning just as the f16 had finished, prior to the day i was chatting to him and he wasnt happy with the yanks and was gonna show em how its done…
hell did he show em, high speed pass between 2 trees at the end of the runwy so low that it blow my mum off a tin toilet in the campsite, then promptly went vertical with a nice tail slide, and a climb to xx,xxxft after i chatted with him and he said he came in a little tooo low between the trees and too quick,he was close to mach 1,think he said 0.9
a little is a understatement, the yanks said to him that they could never beat the rate of climb of the lightning.
to this day i have never seen a aircraft soo low or fast.
finningley with the blue angels was outstanding, and to top it all off the vulcan at waddington made me feel like a little boy again.

A couple spring to mind 🙂
The B1 Lancer wowing the crowds on the Sunday at Waddington 2003. High speed pass followed by a roll into a hole in the clouds. Awesome http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=URcUBAB8cYk
Standing by the perimeter fence on the A45 at BHX with the end of the runway 50m or so away when Concorde did the farewell tour. One of the highlights of my life!
I was standing by the blue car 😮 http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=foLRX3aBJQ0
DC3’s at the Coventry Classic 2003
Mig 29 OVT at RIAT 2006 did things in the air which seemed to defy the laws of physics and the high-speed, quiet arrival of the DHL 757 at Cosford 2005 was quite cool 😀

Elvington 2006 I think, was camping over the full weekend. Friday evening, arrivals had finished coming in and light was fading, practically no-one around, headed back to the stall we were helping to set up when I heard a Merlin engine. Ran back to edge of runway just in time to watch a solitary Spitfire dive out from the sunset and buzz the airfield before landing. The lighting was beautiful, but you had to be there I guess!

My dad buying me a Novo (?) Hawker Hunter kit and a diecast Matchbox Lightning at Church Fenton airshow when I was about 4.

As a child I remember shows at Upper Heyford, Abingdon and Benson etc where the commentator would ask for a car to be removed as it was parked illegally. After several requests, the car would be removed, quite literally, by a Wessex or Whirlwind helicopter and dropped to destruction in front of the crowd! Most knew it was set up but was great fun all the same!

Ok, I think I know where you mean now (and it’s the A8 rather than the A1) – this is just before the turn off from the dual carriageway and the roundabout to the ‘new’ terminal?

Where was that taken? I’m racking my brains trying to remember what the roads around the airport looked like in the old days.
It was on the old A1 that ran past the airfield. The view is from the south side of the road about 200 yds from the Highland Show Main Entrance looking westish. The “hills” in the background are I think shale bings. It was the 50 sign that appealed to me. The view is much the same with the entrance to Norton Park on the left but the house in view is now nearly covered by trees.

favorite airshow moments
Going to the burger stand when ever the Red Arrows were on!
Fairford ’91 arrivals, seeing RAE Comet, DC-6, USN Skywarrior, blue 19/92 sqn Phantoms, Gulf war pink Tristar and Buccs, orange German Canberra on finals all on one sunny day was something different.
Farnborough 1996? first one with all the Russian stuff, SU-27s doing cobras and tailslides was absolutely breathtaking and still not beaten IMO, MiG-29s, massive AN-225, SU-24. Both of those shows were definetly highlights for me.

Farnborough 58. The 22 Hunter loop of course but also the Fighter Command flypast of 45 Hunters and 45 Javelins!
Farnborough 62. Standing opposite the 16 Blue Diamonds Hunters as they revved up on the runway with 74 Sqn’s Lightnings behind them. As one, they all throttled up together, released the brakes and went! Seconds later, 74 Sqn banged on the reheat and took off over the Hunters! Why oh why do we not get displays like that now??? (You could stand much closer to the runway then as well!)

Middle Wallop
Was that the show where scores of helicopters were parked and hidden just off the field behind trees and the like before the press and latterly the public arrived. Then at a pre-determined time they all fired up with us all wondering what the hell was going on, and then all rose slowly into view accompanied by the music on the PA? It is all coming back to me. Yes that was something very very special?
How many helicopters – 60, 80 a 100?
Moggy I defy even you to have not been a smidge impressed if you did not know what was going to happen.

For Robbie, who nominated the 100+ hellis at Middle Wallop’s shows as one of his fav moment. One of mine too, and one year I got to be right in the middle of them as they marched overhead (you know what I mean) to ‘Ride of the Valkyres’ – cliched, but amazing – “I do LOVE the small of Jet A1 in the Morning…”
