Dave Mallon

After watching the last episode of the superb Spitfire Ace I think we could be looking at a future Warbird pilot in Dave Mallon.
The way in which he handled ML407 was purfect.
After all we desperately need some young blood on the Warbird circuit.

And I would like to sign myself up, too, just to even the odds. Anyone after a short, overweight, butt-ugly 24yr old fighter pilot, you know where to come! 😉

Not too sure about this, but didn’t Carolyn herself fly ML407 after flying her Stampe? I seem to remember this in the film “Going Solo” but haven’t watched it in a while to be sure.

This was great television but in reality there was something in between ‘solo in the Tiger Moth/Magister’ and ‘five hours in a Hurricane/Spitfire at the OTU and off you go’ and that was several score of hours in the Master/Harvard with variable pitch propeller and retracting undercarriage.

Maybe not as ‘televisual’ but I for one would have liked to have seen a bit of front seat in the Harvard and the mastering of some of the tricky bits in the circuit.

I am sure Dave Mallon is a very able pilot but I think the insurers will want to see Harvard hours into three figures before we see him at the airshows in a Spitfire.

Again great television and extremely moving.

Well as they said in the film.

The warbird pilots loops were not perfect so as to avoid being in a straight line and after all they were trying to teach him combat manouvers not precise aerobatics.

I especially like the bit where the pilot used to fly with rudder trim to avoid being in a straight line and that the bullets used to fly right past him. Pete Brothers was it who said that. My memory really is terrible.

Steady-on!

It might have been for the benfit of avoiding the camera ship, but some of those loops were distinctly a long way from ‘purfect’

Moggy.

(Like I could do any better  )

I was thinking exactly the same thing. Pete Kynsey seemed to be quite pleasantly surprised, and young Dave certainly seemed to have the aptitude. The warbird community certainly does seem to be in need of some new young pilots for the future; apart from Glenn and Leah, there don’t seem to be many others coming through the ranks. (although there’s a willing volunteer for flying duties sitting in front of my pc at the moment 😉 )
