I last visited the RAF Museum at Hendon more than 10 years ago and left suitably impressed, as on my previous visits. Now I just came across some recentpictures from this museum over at airliners.net, and I notice that they are wasting valuable exhibition space on a CASA Jungmann (!!) and the EH101 prototype (!!!) amongst others Coupled with the pictures of the “Milestones of Flight” exhibit and the jacked-up Typhoon, I seriously wondering what is happening there? Can anyone enlighten me?

Lord knows what goes through the minds of the people that plan these things at Hendon; despite the not very impressive ‘Milestones’ (ahem) building, they seem to be moving back into the 70’s, not forward into the 21st century!

Perhaps Cosford would be a better place, however there is a rotation of aircraft between the two sites so perhaps it will go to Cosford one day in the future, however it does fit in with the other egg beaters that live in that end of Hendon and perhaps goes some way to illustrate the development of the helicopter.

I’m not saying it shouldn’t be saved (the Merlin), but it seems to me to be better suited to display at Cosford, rather than Hendon.

Maybe this is the reason we don’t have a Stirling etc in the UK. Imagine the conversation 50+ years ago. “Why on earth are we wasting valuable space with an old bomber”
Maybe in 50 years time we might be grateful that an EH101 and a Jungmann were preserved by the RAFM. Think ahead guys.

To me the Merlin belongs at Cosford. I can’t see why they’ve put it into Hendon.

The Jungmann is in the BoB hall and (if I remember correctly) is there to illustrate the types of trainers being used by Germany in the war. An authentic airframe was a non-starter so they went for the next best representation. I quite like the Merlin prototype, but then i’m quite strange………;)
