Spitfire Trainers

Now that PV202 will hopefully be back in the air this year, with a ‘normal’ high rear canopy, anyone remember the yellow Spitfire Mk IX trainer that used to be around the UK in the 60s and 70s? Where did it go?

Not sure of the registration, but always remember it was all over bright yellow.

MT818/G-AIDN Race numbers

Neil,

‘IDN carried the race number 66 through most of the 1960’s right up until the change to the dark blue in 1969.

Interestingly shots of Sir Billy Butlin posing, parachute on, in front of the aircraft at Biggin Hill in July 1959 for the London to Paris Dash – No race number.

In earlier times ‘IDN carried race numbers 3, 5, 42 & 83.

Anybody know where to source the events?

Mark

MT818 race number

Septic- The race number was worn for IDN’s to participation in the London – Paris (ARch to ARC) Air Race. The Pilot was Viv Bellamy with Billy Butlin as Passenger/ Competitor. I belive this was in 1959.
Dazdaman- I’ll take any and all help anyone wishes to provide. Information, photos, stories, log book entries etc. I would like to uncover more details about all the two seaters in the “limbo times” after conversion and use by the services.

Thanks to all of you- Neil Medcalf

Moggy,

You might not have liked the undersurfaces and the spinner up close.

It was ‘Batwing’ with blue over white and the spinner spiral made it look like it was running eccentrically at low speed.

I’ll dig out a photo.

Love that blue colour scheme!

Don’t think I’d have run the stripe round the nose like that, but certainly one of the nicer looking Spitfire liveries IMHO

Neil – what kind of information do you need? I’d be glad to help out if I can.

(I’ve got a photo or two of ML407 somewhere, too!)

I am currently researching these aircraft for a book. I would like to ask any of you who would like to donate photos and information to the cause to send them to me please..And Many Thanks! –

RE : Spitfire trainer G-AIDN

Is everyone aware that this Spitfire trainer is actually a mark TR.8 and I believe was the only one ever built ,and not a TR.IX .
Didn’t want to split hairs or pick holes but, I thought I’d mention it as I hadn’t seen it pointed out previously.
Cracking pictures by the way, are there any more?

These Spitfire threads just keep on coming πŸ˜€

Here’s the same Spit in her current markings. This is one of my favourite images – dunno why, though!

G-AIDN now owned by Jack Erickson in the US as N58JE, Im not sure if its currently airworthy.

It also wore both light blue and dark blue civil paint schemes, just before it left the UK it was repainted in RAF markings coded GM.
